And we think Barry Bonds is an asshole.March 16, 1907: During spring training at Warren Park in Augusta, Ga., Detroit Tigers outfielder Ty Cobb, known to be a racist, gets into a fistfight with an African-American groundskeeper he has known for several years.
When the man, nicknamed "Bungy," tries to shake his hand and calls him "Carrie," Cobb pushes Bungy's hand away. When he comes close again, Cobb slaps him and chases him toward the clubhouse.
The groundskeeper's wife runs out of the clubhouse, which she has been cleaning, and yells at Cobb. He grabs her and begins to choke her. Husky Tigers catcher Boss Schmidt, who reputedly had fought an exhibition fight against future heavyweight champ Jack Johnson, intervenes and stops Cobb from hurting her further. Then Cobb and Schmidt get into a fight until separated by their teammates, who generally side with Schmidt.
That night, Detroit manager Hughie Jennings tries to trade Cobb to Cleveland for outfielder Elmer Flick, the 1905 American League batting champion. But he's turned down because Cleveland manager Nap Lajoie thinks Cobb is a troublemaker.

I'm not saying that Cobb isn't remembered by baseball fans as an asshole. But when I hear people whining about today's players, I think back to guys like Cobb from the old school and tell myself these modern day players freakin choirboys compared to the old timers.Adelpiero wrote:Cobb is remembered as a huge asshole, don;t be foolish enough to think he isn;t.

todays guys leave nothing on the field, and still are assholes, criminals, cheaters, etc.
guys of old days drank 2 cases of beer, then pitched a double header, both games, all 9 innings.
these guys are begging for middle relief in the 6th!

I disagree to a point. Managers have a lot to do with turning modern pitchers into pussies. They are the ones enforcing pitch counts. You may recall 2 playoffs ago that it was Pedro Martienez that talk Jimy Williams into keeping him in one batter too long. And, fans rightly gave WIlliams hell for not doing the right thing.Adelpiero wrote:see, those guys left it all out on the field, and were assholes, partiers, etc. todays guys leave nothing on the field, and still are assholes, criminals, cheaters, etc. guys of old days drank 2 cases of beer, then pitched a double header, both games, all 9 innings. these guys are begging for middle relief in the 6th!BSmack wrote:I'm not saying that Cobb isn't remembered by baseball fans as an asshole. And certainly there are teams that have left it all out on the field in modern times. The recent incarnation of the Yankees dynasty comes to mind. Right off the top of my head. You could also make cases for the 91 Twins, 90 Reds, the 03 and 04 Red Sox and a bunch more that don't come to mind right away. Are there jake teams out there? Sure. But don't tell me the St Louis Brown back in the day didn't pack it in when they were 50 games out in the AL.
