What, no 9/11 thread?

How quickly we forget. Hell, it's only been 7 years...
Yeah, I know... this topic has been beaten like a dead horse and everyone has such busy lives, who's got the time to commemorate one of the most tragic days in American history?
Well, guess I do.
I just want to recall some of the most striking images of that day, and there were many. But the ones that still stick with me more than any others are of seeing people making the decision to jump to their death rather than face immolation from burning jet fuel.
Good lord, one minute you're at work doing a mundane job, the next you're faced with what's the most preferable way of dying. I have no idea what was going thru those folks mind, of course... but I probably would have done the same thing.
I remember thinking at the time how terrified the passengers on those planes must have been... but they really didn't know what was coming, and then it was over in an instant.
The other thing that bugs me is whenever I see an "old" movie set in New York, they invariably show pics of the WTC in the background... and everytime I see them, I get a hollow feeling in my gut and a real sense of sadness over what was lost... immediately followed by an insane rage to go kill somebody.
I will never forget.

God of our fathers, known of old--
Lord of our far-flung battle line
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
The tumult and the shouting dies;
The captains and the kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe--
Such boasting as the Gentiles use
Or lesser breeds without the law--
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget - lest we forget!
For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard--
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard--
For frantic boast and foolish word,
Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord!

Called a few comrades...talked about throwing some ribs on the grill...crackin' a few icy cold ones...
Nothing ever became of it. Not like the "old days".

Who said anyone forgot? Just because we're not getting all weepy and calling for an American Jihad doesn't mean we don't remember.

I wept. I still weep.
What's with the "we" stuff? You usually don't have any problem speaking for yourself... wait, it's an election year. I understand...
Btw, I remember quite clearly you posting pictures at TNW of Palestinians celebrating... as if you were gloating. Yes/No?
Patten for Welker?

You wondered if the collective "we" had forgotten. I answered in kind. It's really that simple.

Nope, that wasn't me. And I sure the fuck wasn't gloating about something I knew would serve as the pretext for our idiot President to bankrupt our country and shred the Constitution.
Patten for Welker?

Who scored more points last week? A trade is a calculated risk. I'll be seeing the Crusaders in a couple of weeks. ;)

Look, I didn't start this thread with an open invitation to mouth breathing idiots to comment about Palin.
Show some respect.

For all my faults, a failing memory isn't one of them. You
were quite the radical back then. Maybe one of the old crew can verify or debunk that notion.
That pissed me off, whoever it was... and surely you remember... as if what happened was deserved.

Figured your earning power didn't allow such splurges as basic cable.
Try History or MSNBC.
Don't know (or want to) about MessNBC, but the Histoty Channel has 9/11 specials from 8PM on (PST)

I thought a lot about 9/11 today, more than I had for a few years.
I think mvscal is right - we're no closer to an answer to terror than we were that day. We've made some progress, but I have to assume those who would attack us have also.
We're very comfortable here in America, and it's getting harder and harder for people to remember exactly how lucky/blessed we are.

No, he's made his agenda clear.
The sooner this country is irretrievably destroyed, the sooner we can begin putting it back together on a more sane footing starting with the basics.

Good idea to shield your eyes from anything not Fox News.
I just mentioned ABC news, moron.
The only thing MessNBC is good for is a laugh at how retarded they can be.
Even Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams think they're an embarassment.

Not really.
For any American lucky enough to have been born here, part of their daily ritual should be quietly thanking God for their good fortune.
Or not so quietly.

Man, 9/11 nearly slipped my mind yesterday with all the hurricane preparation I was going through. It had not dawned on me until I was able to catch the last couple of innings of the 'Stros game and saw the patriotic hats the players were wearing. I had all the flashbacks of that day shortly after seeing those hats.
Fuck terrorism.

You had flashbacks? I guess going to that "Death to bin Laden" Acid Test 7 years ago was a bad idea.

At the onset of the war, I questioned whether any Arab nation state was capable of democracy and whether it could work in Iraq, even if our military campaign and post-invasion reconstruction was flawless. I didn't say it couldn't work, but that I had my doubts. I distinctly remember posting something along those lines in a thread either on this board or over at thetrolls.com
Both you and Tom were in on that discussion, (if I recall correctly), along with mTool, who at the time was trying to argue that there are no Arabs in Africa or some shit.
At any rate, I don't think we should abandon liberal democracy as a revolutionary political ideology in a greater sense. Feeble facades of it in places like Jordan notwithstanding, today's Arab world is either incapable or unwilling to join the 18th century.
I think you're right about it becoming similar to Lebanan.

No, but I did watch MSNBC's "9-11 As It Happened" special where they just broadcast the NBC News reports of the first 4 hours of 9-11 coverage. I was surprised to see that it took them a solid minute to realize that the first tower had collapsed. Other than that, it was just as I remembered it.
