So we are about T - 16 hours.
Water is rising in Galveston and the waves are breaking over the top of the 17 foot tall sea wall. West end of Galveston island is underwater. The eye of the storm is still 200 miles from landfall.
I will post updated pics as power and light allow. Worst of strom is due overnight and that might limit the ability to take pics during the height of the storm.

Jsc810 wrote:You need to be doing as much as you can right now to be getting ready. This is a huge storm, the worst to hit Texas in your lifetime. Even in Baton Rouge we're getting a part of it now, and we're a long way away. You're not. It is headed directly for you.
You need to assume that for the next week you will be without electricity, (plan in place and have three weeks of canned and dried food) and there will be no stores open to sell gas, (Both cars are filled and we have 50 gallons in cans, wife has access to city emergency supplies due to job) ice, batteries, (enough on hand to power small city for a few days) medicine, (neither one of us on prescriptions but Dr prescribed a few common antis and have two complete first aid kits) food, (see above) or water (have over 100 gallons for wife and I. Also have pallets of water in garage for policy holders). You need to assume that normal governmental functions, such as police, fire, and ambulance service, will be limited. You need to have materials and tools to make temporary repairs to your house, such as tarps (check) and wood (check). Things like chainsaws (check) and generators are really nice.
Hopefully it will not be that bad. But there is an all-too realistic chance that it will be, and you want to be ready. Godspeed.

Waves crashing over top of 17 foot seawall in Galveston
If by backyard you mean 400 acres then yeah I guess it is the same thing.
Difference between a ditch and bayou is a bayou always has flowing water.

Unless, of course, it's in proximity to LS's house, apparently --

I'd say "make up your mind, dumbass," but you should probably focus on not getting dead right now.
'Round these parts, we have a phrase that describes waves clearing a 17 foot seawall -- we call that "a day that ends in 'y'."

Forecasters said Ike's storm surge -- not high winds -- will be the deadliest aspect of the Hurricane Ike. The National Hurricane Center is forecasting a 20-foot surge for a large swath of Texas and the Louisiana coasts. Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said some waves could be 50 feet tall.
"All neighborhoods ... and possible entire coastal communities ... will be inundated during the period of peak storm tide," the weather service said. "Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single-family one- or two-story homes will face certain death."
"That's the most dangerous part of a hurricane," TV station KPRC's meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.
A 15- to 22-foot storm surge is expected wherever Ike makes landfall.
Experts said Ike stretches across nearly the entire Gulf of Mexico and is about 70 percent larger than the average hurricane. That girth will push the storm surge through costal communities that are sorely underprepared.
Experts said that because coastal waters in Texas and Louisiana are so shallow, storm surge is usually larger there than in other regions.
The storm's track shifted slightly Thursday afternoon and then again Thursday night.
"There has been a little shift, about a few miles. It could show a trend that it's moving," KPRC's chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "It's expected to pump up to a Category 3 by the time it makes landfall, with 110 to 120 mph winds as a possibility."
Ike's tropical storm-force winds stretch for more than 500 miles, and hurricane-force winds of at least 74 mph stretch for 220 miles.
Galveston appears to be right in the bullseye, a little more than 200 miles away.

'Round these parts, we have another name for a 22 foot wave -- we call that "every fucking few minutes in winter."
Which leads to another regional phrase -- 'round these parts, we have another name for Hurricane Ike... we call it "Hurricane Darwin."
If 22 feet of water can hit your house -- please stay put. Chucky D has a message for you... just wait right there, and it will be delivered shortly.
But let me guess -- someone wants me to pay for the monumental stupidity of others?

Dins,
The Bayou has water flowing in the bottom, but is empty per our terminoligy.
And yes we expect you to pay your part for any help required. We can say living in your area is just as dumb what with Volcanoes and and Earthquakes. Hell, at least we know when hurricanes will strike.

Fuggin Texans. Can't even figure out what the word "empty" means.
And yes we expect you to pay your part for any help required.
Fuggin Texans -- the Communist Manifesto and the Holy Bible are one and the same, if they can make a buck off it.
We can say living in your area is just as dumb what with Volcanoes and and Earthquakes.
Nice try... for a Texan.
Uhm... not a whole fuckload of people living on the sides of volcanoes. And newsflash -- you get a fuckload more warning that a volcano is going to blow than a hurricane coming.
t least we know when hurricanes will strike.
Every few years, apparently.
Yet you still don't move, and just expect everyone else to pay for your stupidity.
You know how many people live on or around Mt St Helens these days?
I'll give you a hint -- it's ZERO.
See, 28 years ago, there were 57 people living/working/existing there. They died. So guess what?
People didn't move back there because it's dangerous. And you wonder why Darwin is so much more cruel to people in
certain areas... certain areas that have rightfully earned their reputation as being rife with raging dumbfucks.

Nice house---but you might want to shit can the plywood thing and invest in some nice aluminum accordion shutters or something like that. I can close up all my windows, sliders, and doorways in less than 1/2 and hour. Riding out a hurricane is not all that bad as long as you are out of a flooding/storm surge area. Good luck !

You see this, mouth-breathers? For all the crying about poli threads - or whatever threads whose subject doesn't particularly inspire you, it really just boils down to an issue of
personal responsibility.
EVERY thread has an opportunity for the funny. Posts like Mgo's are particularly rackable because he finds the funny where it is unexpected.
I laugh at those who need to get good and comfy before they feel like trying to be funny. 99% of the time, that approach doesn't really yield much funny anyway...but you don't need me to point that out, the examples are thick about the carpet.

Whatever Dins,
You can believe what you want, but I remember being in Vancouver WA when St Helen's blew. There was much gov help as roofs were covered in ash and then the rains a few days later started colapsing them.
But don't let facts get in your way of a post.

Hey Rack Fu,
you bought all of that shit, but you couldn't afford taller fences?
You have a pool and hot tub where presumably you plead with the little lady (or perhaps a coat hanger or a fallen branch you happen to have taken a shine too) to give it up...all in full view of your neighbors?
Maybe you can trade in that semi cab you have out front for a taller fence.

PS- You might want to remove your Sat dish so it doesn't rip a massive hole in your roof...

If so, you don't live in Houston.
It's like the Sacramento folks saying they live in San Francisco when they travel and are asked where they're from.
Highway 6 is well over 100 miles from the Gulf and the Hurricane should be just a rain storm by then.

Guess again, dipshit.
The National Hurricane Center wrote:Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 120 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 275 miles.
Even though it's only a Cat. 2, this storm's wind field is a lot larger than a typical hurricane. That is why they are expecting the storm surge to be so high, along with widespread wind damage. The city of Houston is expected to get 90 mph winds downtown.
