You may be right that one should be more broadly informed about a candidate than to be swayed by one public speaking event. However, the debates are pretty much the only semblance of an opportunity we have to see the candidates stand up for what they believe in and defend their positions. Yes, the format is not perfect, but it's the closest thing we have to that interchange. It sure beats the crap the media slings us as "coverage" or "issues".

I'm not surprised that someone who supported George Bush would minimize the importance of the speaking medium...I get that. If winning a debate meant a THING to you, then you wouldn't have voted for Bush, that's for sure. The dude makes fire hydrants seem like rhetorical superstars. Clearly, some other sort of medium is valued by you - I get that.

Personally, the few opportunities we have to see the candidates face one another and make their points are valuable to me. I recognize that they are not valuable to a lot of my fellow Americans...in numbers significant enough to win the last two elections.

It saddens me that the rhetorical art is losing relevance in our public discourse. It saddens me because in my mind, it cheapens the office.

I miss the days where it mattered whether or not our President was capable of moving us with his public speaking. I hope that the dignity of the office is restores by either Obama or McCain...and generally, I'm hopeful that neither one of them will be remotely as bad as Bush.
