Neither team has had much success once they get into the red zone. Ringer has been held in check and it's no coincidence the Spartans only have 16 points into the fourth quarter. Cal beat State by keeping Ringer under 100 yards. It's a lot like any team playing the Vikings...stop the running game and make the mediocre QB try to beat you.

in fairness to jon, that leadership he mentioned as so crucial could still emerge in the last 10 minutes. also, could someone remind me of the conversation mgo and jon had about this game? i think it went something like:

Hoyer is probably what will prevent them from winning the Big Ten title. They'll be a better team next year when he's gone.

i have no problem with the call of going for it, very short yardage, you are running all over them, and they cant stop you

I'm not a huge Brian Hoyer fan, in case you guys haven't noticed. He manages the game decently, has a strong arm, but just isn't a real heady player. He doesn't see the entire field; doesn't read all his options. He stares down his receiver and gives the play away to the D. He just doesn't seem to have a natural feel for the game. He's too mechanical. Needless to say MSU is going to struggle in any game in which Ringer struggles. I fear Wisky, PSU, and OSU...big time.

The positive is this: they won. As an MSU fan you take a win any way you can get it. I bash Brian Hoyer but it was the passing game that got the job done today...which isn't saying much. You combine that with the Iowa turnovers and pretty shitty playcalling by Ferentz and company, and bam, there you have it. Memo to the Iowa OC: If you play action on 1st down EVERYTIME, teams will start to catch on. I mean, jesus, I knew what schemes to run against Iowa today and I was sitting in a La-Z Boy pounding beers. Not good. Not kicking the FG in the 4th was also obviously a huge mistake. Not to mention there were a few times where they passed on 3rd and short when they should've handed it to Greene because MSU couldn't stop him. Shonn Greene is a beast and Stanzi isn't that bad. He can drive Iowa down the field, he just needs to develop better mentally. He'll improve with experience.
