I think I'm going to snap up some fire sale priced stocks in the next month. Anybody have any advice on what I should grab?

Asking anyone on here what to buy in this market shows your complete and total ignorance of any investing knowledge.

Acting on that advice should yield you some real profits. I concur with Goob's recommendation , on bank stocks...lots of penny stock type things out there, as well as local banks, in CA, FL, NV would be good bets since, they had good results in the housing boom.

As Warren Buffet would say, find a company who's balance sheet and stock price don't add up. That's where your bargains will be.

I'm looking hard at several stocks. The first is GM. The other is Emulex.

Bigger picture - whats gonna be needed in the next 5 years:

What I like:

Biotech - DNA, Celg & ISRG - (not bio but huge growth)
Defense Tech - LLL, NOC

I decided to play dirty. Snapped up some bargain basement priced Fannie and Freddie.

Not sure, but I think I'll buy some more in January. Possibly the GM at that time. Right before the new president hits office.

If you want a company that has potential, you have your own Nevada Geothermal NGLPF. Blue mountain power plant has financing and is on schedule to make power by the end of next year. Also tax credits for geothermal power got renewed for two more years in the last bailout bill. Also see Oramat(ORA) and US Geothermal(HTM).

Another is Uranerz(URZ), a uranium exploration company with good prospects in Wyoming. Permits are in to begin extracting uranium and build a mining plant with projected drilling to begin in late 2010.Financing for there mine? Test mines seem to be good so hopefully that wont be a problem. With renewed interest in nuclear power perhaps uranium miners are the place to be. Also see CCJ and URRE and DNN.

I've started buying. I just bought 100 shares of Ford at 1.75. And I'll buy more as time goes on. I also have an 800 share position in a local telcom called PAETEC (PAET). I'll be expanding that as well.

BCO - My shotgun and ammo suggestion was a given, but I can see you may be new to raising livestock so i'll stop you before you make a complete fuckup of this depression.

Take it from Bsmack, you need to take a longer view with the sawn-off if you only have the one solitary pig. It needs loving and breeding not blasting against the garage wall. The pitter-patter of tiny trotters have to be heard first if you want to continue the all day breakfast lifestyle through the dark days ahead.

Telecom.
By telecom stock in the foreign markets. Brazil, Italy, UK, France, Hong Kong and others all have excellent buys right now.
Hong Kong banks (some of them....do your research) are also very good buys right now.
Daimler
Pharmaceutical companies.
