Picture viewer

I used to have some default program that was called when I viewed a picture. It worked well, it allowed me to set up a slide show for hands-free viewing. Then I went to download pictures from my new digital camera and this Windows Photo Gallery got loaded into my computer and is now the default picture viewer. I don't really care for it.

I can't find the old program which I think was "Windows Picture Viewer" or something like that. Any ideas, suggestions (aside from GFY)?

Actually called "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".

Right click on a typical image you use. Select "open with" from the list, then at the bottom of that menu click on "Choose Program", and a list will pop up. Pick the program you want from the list, then check the box at the bottom that says "Always use the selected program" blah blah blah, then click ok.

That should take care of it for that type of image. You can also do this thru the control panel, but six of one, etc. You will need to do it for each type of image (jpg, bmp, gif, etc.)

On install you probably had the option to make the camera software the default or not but only if you did a custom install. The typical install decides for you, and picks the camera software.

Always do a custom install.

now that you know that, you can GFY. ;)

Not a 100% sure what you are babling about. That MS Fax picture viewer came with MS Office so if you don't have that anymore, you can look at some other stuff.

My suggestion is to download Google's Picasa and use that. It is a great picture viewer. Does some very basic editing (a bit more then the fax viewer did) and allows you to use Google's Picasa service with it, which will soon support videos, pictures and more. The new Beta 3 of Picasa also supports most of the raw file formats for camera geeks and allows you to do many nifty things with your pictures.

ET,

Sometimes digital P&S cameras make their own viewer software the system default when you hook them up to your 'puter. Others give you the option to choose the default pic viewer right away.

I’ll check out the Google thingy. I also found another free viewer which works pretty well for my needs (hands-free viewing of porn):
