thou shalt surely die

God's Word to man, as recorded in Genesis 2:17, if man ate from the tree.

Genesis 2:17
but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Man didn't die physically that day.
Did God lie?

No, man died spiritually that day.

Also recorded in the Bible is that this spiritual death has passed to all men, for all men come from the seed of Adam.

Romans 5:12
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned

The spiritual death comes because man is a creation who must live with the Creator.
It is not optional.

Because man is a spiritual being who is created to live with the Creator, man has a spiritual hunger.
Apart from his Creator, man attempts to fill his hunger.

He gravitates to philosophies or ideologies of his own (or someone else's) imagination.
He gravitates to religion.
He gravitates to a "good" lifestyle.

But being from the seed of Adam, and having died spiritually, none of these efforts solve the fundamental problem he has -- separation from the Creator with whom he must live.

And so inevitably, the curses, strife, illnesses, or disasters come crashing in.

But God, knowing man, coming from the corrupt seed of Adam, has no hope, promised the seed of the WOMAN -- the Christ (Genesis 3:15) who brings man back to the Creator with whom he must live.

Matthew 16:16
Jesus, you are the Christ

Man is a creation.

It's not possible for the creation to live apart from the Creator.
