Preacher Roe DEAD

Roe was one of the colorful characters in Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer, among my favorite books. Though not an unusual stat for starting pitchers of that era, dude threw 101 complete games in only a 12-yr career. Had a cool euphemism for a spitball, too. RIP Preacher.

Is there a secret spreadsheet here that keeps track of folks that are the first to post "so and so, DEAD" threads?

If so, who's in the lead?

I think Smackie is the only one who actually posts DEAD threads.

Most make some reference to "RIP".

I'll admit, I do occasionally start a Dead thread but it's usually more like this:

Dark star crashes
pouring its light
into ashes

Reason tatters
the forces tear loose
from the axis

Searchlight casting
for faults in the
clouds of delusion

shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds

Mirror shatters
in formless reflections
of matter

Glass hand dissolving
to ice petal flowers
revolving

Lady in velvet
recedes
in the nights of goodbye

Shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds

If you're not the subject of the next "RIP" thread, I'm gonna be verrah dissapointed.

I've got one foot in the grave.

But one foot's still out.

Don't hold your breath.
Just be down with my awesomeness and experience at least a temporary oneness with nirvana.

Nirvana? I thought that was the Grateful Dead?

I'm pretty sure the number of DEAD threads I've started can be counted on one hand. I doubt that's good enough to take the gold. I'll train harder.

On a related note, another former major league pitcher whose name evokes images of a Dinsdale Saturday night has also died: Herb Score.

And 50+ years later, pitchers still don't wear helmets. Yep, we've evolved as a species.

The helmet would have to include a full face mask. One such incident in over 100 years of professional baseball probably wouldn’t justify a rule change, and I can’t believe any major league pitcher would voluntarily wear a helmet and face mask.

Not evolved? 70 years ago you would've been drowned like a fucking sack of kittens at birth.

I'm all for safety, but the sheer faggotry of pitchers with helmets is amazing
Ray Chapman thought the same thing about batters helmets.
