Cannery Row
Just finished this book. Excellent stuff. Whimsical, to be sure. Doc was a wonderful character. You have to applaud the others and their devotion to this hub around which the others spun (or did he spin them?). Very enjoyable work. Going in, I was expecting a working class type book, focused on the canning industry and those who worked/relied upon it. However, I enjoyed the lives of the misfits of this area. Wonderful. I'd recommend to anybody.
Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Re: Cannery Row
btw, PSU, I understand that Steinbeck wrote a sequel (Sweet Thursday). Hadn't heard of it until recently. How's it stack up, if you've given it a read?

Re: Cannery Row
I was into Steinbeck some years back, and read all of his stuff. I thought it all was very good. A couple of his works are classics, even. I recommend you read it all...and then pick up some Sherwood Anderson, like Winesburg, Ohio.
