great job by Tejas. You don't want Tenn,Auburn, etc to come calling this off season. And it's great for recruiting, the kids will know who's going to be coach, and when Mack retires, who is taking over. Your not stuck with a whole new coaching staff, because of a new coach.

I'm not a fan of hiring coaches without head coaching experience, so good luck to Texas. Additionally, I find this trend rather odd. My guess is that many of the coaches in waiting will fizzle, and this trend will abate some time down the road.

Now, if he becomes the next Tom Osborne, Barry Switzer or Bob Stoops, it was a GREAT idea!

it's a pretty good gamble, but it's still a gamble. Greg Robinson had a pretty stout D at UT as well. But, still better than hiring Mike Sherman.

i wonder what Greg Davis or Chizik thinks about it.

It is a huge gamble, but I think Mack Brown will be a good mentor for a him. A lot of people appear impressed at how Brown runs the show at UT. He has an impressive W-L record and his only real knock is his lack of conference titles, but that has been easily forgiven around here due to the crystal football on display. Aside from the record everything else he has done at the school has been top notch. He got the alumni and fans to buy in, he has great rapore with pretty much every high school coach in the state, and always shows class on and off the field.Mack has 8 years left on his current contract so it is hard to forsee when he retires. I figure he will eventually become AD and still be close enough to help bring along Muschamp. I figure maybe more than 2 years and in the upcoming years he will be grooming a head coach. I don't think Chizik is a fai comparison because it seems like he was wanting a HC gig relatively fast and jumped on one fast. Lord knows he could have gotten in a better place than Ames. As for Greg Davis, him and Brown are a package deal as they have been for a long time. I figure when Brown goes and so does Davis. Maybe then Major Applewhite will be promoted to OC. I'm sure there will be better candidates when the day comes when the Mack Brown Texas Fottball era comes to an end, but this deal leaves the program with a considerable upside.

Yeah, when Chizik was hired I thought "wow, nice pull by the Clones". But then I wondered if Chizik was drunk off his ass when he agreed to the deal. I don't think he was as pursued of a coach as Stoops was back in 1998, but he certainly could have done better. Why not start off with at a good solid MAC school and then try and parlay that into a top-notch BCS job? He has no ties to ISU, so you know he wants more than this and going the MAC/CUSA route to the top would be much easier. I have no idea what he was thinking and there were reports out of Dallas a couple weeks ago that he even told some Okie State assistants he's regretting the decision (though who knows if they're true). Deep down I think he wishes he could have his decision back. He'll never admit to it, but I guarantee you now he's realizing what he got himself into.

thing with Chizik (at UT) is he's got a ring from that crystal trophy year and was never going to be hotter (likely)...and Muschamp was going to be in the same situation minus the ring. i'd put the Muschamp succession more in the realm of an institutional decision by UT more than a function of Chiz jumping early. You think if DeLoss and Mack come to Chiz in 05 after the Rose Bowl and say...."hang around for a couple years and you'll be the head coach at Texas", he's going to ISU?

i didn't mean Davis seriously, but longtime assistant probably thinks that if there is a line of succession he ought to be in the hierarchy, not the guy with less than a full season.

i don't think it's more than a year or two for Muschamp to wait. too much risk for both parties legally for it to be otherwise. If UT goes 7-5 in 09 or 10 and gives up a ton of points, how hot on Muschamp will people be? It's not likely, but not impossible.

Good in terms of making the DC-position at Texas no-longer a game of musical chairs. The D will be good and defensive recruits will know who they'll be playing for.

Only time will tell whether Muschamp will be a quality HC but he'll have a lot of talent to work with which tends to make one look smarter.


I doubt Mack is leaving any time real soon, not til he's past 60 anyway.

1. I'm surprised Mack is showing possible interest in retiring in the next couplefew years. He seems in good health. He has a hell of a sweet deal at t.u. with his pick of the littler for recruits. Nice contract. Good coach.

2. ^That^ being said, if he does decide to stay on for 5-7 more years, I'm surprised they would string Muschamp along for that long before giving him his chance because a) He's the hot commodity right now and could make big bucks and b) If t.u. defense begins to struggle in the next couple years, will t.u. still be so high on him?

Just seems like a slippery slope. From Muschamp's perspective, being young, and if I were him, I would not mind being strung along for 4-5 years knowing that I would have one of the most prestigious CFB gigs coming my way. Learn the ropes and take off running when handed the ball.

Sounds like his wife made the decision to stay in Austin.

"When I first came here in January and my wife, Carol, and boys, Jackson and Whit, stayed back in Auburn, I got such a great feel for the community and people. When Carol and the kids moved here in May, they fell in love with Austin. If I would have left, I would have left on my own because she was staying here. She really loves the community and the people, and our kids love their schools. It's just a special place and somewhere I want to be for a long time.
