This is going back a few days to the ending of the Arizona/UAB game. For those who didn't see, which is probably most not living in the Pacific time zone. (Hell the only reason I even caught it was because I'd fallen asleep on the couch and my 6 month old woke me up and when I got her back to sleep I saw the final 5 minutes of the game)
Anyfuck, UAB has pulled a typical Mike Davis and fallen apart down the stretch blowing a game they seemingly had in hand and allowing Zona to tie the game. Apparently the Wildcats already miss Lute because knucklehead from Arizona still thinks Zona is trailing and fouls a UAB player. He gets off the hook as UAB misses the front end of the 1-1 and Zona now has the ball with 25 seconds to go in a tie game. Repeat: tie game. So Zona goes for the alleged final shot and misses and as the UAB player is hoisting up a 75 footer at the buzzer to avoid OT (because remember the game is still tied) he gets intentionally fouled by an Arizona player with .8 seconds left!!! UAB hits 1 free throw but since it was an intentional foul Zona doesn't even get to attempt a prayer shot as it's UAB ball. Game over.
I of course still remember the Gtown player passing the ball to Worthy in 82 and Weber calling the timeout that wasn't in 93, and being in title matches the impact was WAAAAAAY greater than this play, but those IMO don't compare on the stupidity scale to this play. Unless someone can come up with another nominee I vote this the dumbest play ever.
Dumbest play ever??

Dumbest play ever??

i don't remember exactly but i think CU makes the NCAA tournament because of this play/advancing in the conference tournament.
the 3 off the glass for the winner....and the sprint to the locker room. classic bad basketball compressed in just a few seconds.
edit: yup, CU makes the NCAA and loses to Babs-era Izzo in the first round.

Completely agree with the take. Don't forget Webber also got a gift no-call when he dragged his pivot foot all the way to Baton Rouge in his own end of the court before calling the infamous TO.

Re: Dumbest play ever??
Oklahoma did a similar thing yesterday against Gardner-Webb. GW hung around, hung around playing a 2-3 zone and then took a couple 5 point leads in the second half. OU comes back, strings together a few stops and retakes the lead. finally, after the typical end of game FT scenarios, Sooners are up 4 with a couple seconds left. GW inbounds to midcourt and player heaves the hail mary shot and OU's Taylor Griffin fouls the guy in the act of shooting for some unknown reason.
so 1. let's say he makes it, he's going to the line for the tie (in a previously 2 possession game that is over if all of OU's players are on the way to the nacho stand)...or 2. what happens, OU gives GW 3 FT's with some time on the clock where there are multiple scenarios for making a couple FT's and an intentional miss. conceivably, even win the game with 2 makes...intentional miss and a made 3.
