Oregon at 10, Boise State at 11... I guess the pollsters forgot about BSU beating Oregon in Eugene... which I haven't yet, since I was there. Of courrse, that was back in the No Starting QB Era, but still...
Yeah, I know it's a "body of work" thing.

Agreed, Mace. Iowa and Oregon are two of the better examples of teams that didn't really hit any sort of stride until halfway through the season or thereabouts.
Boise State is kind of the opposite -- looked unbeatable by anyone in the early-going, but went out with a whimper in their bowl.

9-4 with 4 losses by a combined total of 12 points......
Oh what could have been!

It could've been worse. Some of your wins were close too.

Exactly. 9-4 could've been 7-6, and with those two extra losses who knows what sort of bowl match up you might've received?
In the end, your record is your record. Should'ves don't matter and what might have beens are fool's gold.
Iowa had a decent year, with a nice bowl win. They were the only Big 10 team to win a bowl game. It was a good rebound year for Iowa. Keep it going next year. Make it a trend, not an aberration.
Also, keep in mind, both OSU and PSU will be down next year, at least if one considers all the people each team is losing. With Michigan also being down and with Wisconsin having completely lost the plot the Big 10 should be wide open next year. No reason a resurgent Iowa can't jump right back into the mix there...
