First Paying Gig
So the garage band I started has our first "paid" gig...my sis in law is dating a guy who owns a small bar...so we got the hook up to play one night...pretty cool...have been a long time drummer, got back into it a few years back as an MBA graduation present to myself and bought a cheap kit and have made it work. We have played around the hood for some parties and people generally like what we throw out there...here is a partial set list
Forever - Papa Roach
Fake It - Seether
Rise Above This - Seether
I Alone - Live
Plush - STP
Creep - Radiohead
Say It Ain't So - Weezer
Good Times Bad Times - Combo Zep/Godsmack
Turn The Page
Shooting Star - Bad Company
Feel Like Makin Love - Bad Company
Hey Joe - Hendrix
Brainstew - Green Day
Blvd Of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Like A Stone - Audioslave (possibly still working it out)
Wanted Dead Or Alive - Bon Jovi
so that is a partial list...we obviously play mostly rock/classic stuff...but anyhoo just a cool thing to be able to play at a bar in front of people I don't know and people I do know...back in the younger days SC was actually a pretty fair drummer...but with kids, job, etc practice time is limited...although I guess I could buy a pad, etc and practice at least rudiments and shit...
anyway flame away or whatever just thought it was cool...

Re: First Paying Gig
With that setlist, I would pay you NOT to play my party. Except for the Weezer. With an MBA, I'd hope you have better musical taste than some 19 year old male alcoholic. Guess old habits die hard, right B_Suck?

Don't have a tantrum just because he didn't throw in some MGMT "hits".
I'm sure he can smear on some guy-liner or lisp to draw in your type.

MGMT's hits would be a step up for that shitty ass setlist, choad-slurping fucktard.

Thanks for the props I think Screw... :D
we have La Villa and Working Man if we need it...but we need to play Working Man a whole step down due to vocals so it just doesn't sound "right"
we just put out there some stuff people enjoy...if it were up to me we would be playing Old Metallica, Korn, some Pantera and stuff like that...but hey cover bands, usually cover popular stuff
just sayin...

Does everyone in the crowd get a complimentary bowl of vanilla ice cream?
Sorry, but no hair metal cover band worth their salt leaves Girls Girls Girls off the list. Or at least get 18 And Life in there or something.
And brush up on your licks, so you may one day hope to add Talk Dirty To Me.
If it's anything like a U&L bar with similar entertainment... SIL's Boyfriend's Bar has a lot of meth running around the bathrooms... hair cover bands and meth go together like fish and water.

Subdivisions would be a great Rush song to bust out live. La Villa would be bad ass, too. If you really wanna impress me, go with The Enemy Within.

That's real progress on a real project, and here I had given up all hope.
Good for you.

Dins, "pour some sugar" is a guaranteed chick magnet. Of course, you knew that.

Re: First Paying Gig
Sam - had my eye on a DW 5 pc...but when I told the dude it would be in the garage he said you might want to look at a little cheaper set due to moisture, type of wood, etc...
So I got a black 5 pc Pearl Forum series, with a PDP rack and a Sabian B8 cymbal pack...plus added a small tom to make it 3 rack toms with a floor...I have made it work...does the job for what we do...
yeah should be a blast we just like to jam and play tunes...meh...need something to do in the winter/spring when there is no football news/games

I'd venture to guess that I've spent more time in meth-addled clubs with shitty hair cover bands than everyone else here combined (I all-but lived next door to one for most of my 20's).
So, what I know is Pour Some Sugar On Me isn't neccessarily a "chick magnet" (except maybe in the Flyover). What it is, is a guaranteed over-the-hill wannabe, with stringy hair down past his shoulders, wearing some ridiculous satin big-collared Kip Winger shirt, singing in a horribly out of tune voice while half-ass strumming his out of tune guitar that may or may not even be plugged in, all the while showing his best squinty "bedroom eyes" to the slightly fat skank who showed up to the club alone, after using the mens' room as his personal dressing room.
This much I GUARANTEE you.
It's quite possible that if I'm liquored enough, and the band is particularly offensive, it's entirely possible that I might get up front and center to show off my double-secret white guy dance moves. Not a "guarantee," but a good possibility.

Aw, c'mon, anybody can sing Rush lyrics in the proper key. Ofcourse the prep for it rules out any future reproductive possibilities.
Ofcourse, that a good thing with this crowd.
Anyone else here have their first exposure to Rush be non stop airplay of tom sawyer? That was my first exposure. And my thoughts at the time was, this band rocks. Wonder if the lead singer chick has nice tits?

My first memories of Rush were when I was a kid listening to a local public access cable show produced by a couple of stoners from my school. They would play music and mix it with some very low tech video with some not very special effects that I'm sure in retrospect probably looked like the best shit ever if you happened to be on acid. Which I am absolutely certain these guys were. It was 1981 and of course one of the albums they played to death was "Moving Pictures".
BTW: They also beat "Back in Black", "High n' Dry" and "Heaven and Hell" into the ground as well.

Re: First Paying Gig
Why the hatred for Rush on this forum? Just asking...
It seems (I have said this before) there is no place for the Hard Core rocker (the hard shit like the pantera, korn, old metallica, shit like that fans) or rush fans of the world...it is all indie shit on this forum it seems
meh...oh well...carry on...I was just thinking out loud...
I just want our show to go well and just play the hell out of my kit...

I can absolutely understand people not liking the speed metal/thrash/nu metal genre, but the level of musicianship in these two acts is as good as you'll find in a rock band.
Rush is certainly no slouch in that regard, either.

Re: First Paying Gig
Not sure the year, but I'm thinking 1976 or 77 and "Closer to the Heart" was when I first got assaulted by Rush. I wasn't all that crazy about them but my best friend at the time simply insisted they were the greatest. Whenever I went over to his house, he was constantly queing that shit up. I guess it sorta' grew on me, but later I liked 2112, Working Man, The Trees, way better.BSmack wrote:smackaholic wrote: Anyone else here have their first exposure to Rush be non stop airplay of tom sawyer?

Re: First Paying Gig
Myself, it was hearing Limelight on the FM radio in the late 90s. Rush was the first concert to play Van Andel Arena in GR in 96, so I remember hearing Test For Echo a lot. Moving Pictures was definitely the first Rush album I ever purchased, but Signals ended up being my first to fall in love with.
Of course, I was barraged with the typical Rush radio waves: Working Man, Fly By Night, etc. Those were all epoch, but it was Signals that sealed the deal. RACK Geddy.

No freebird dins...
my first exposure to Rush was my drum teacher...he was a huge fan and he would work on parts of songs with me for the odd time signature stuff...so I just took a liking...also having some of the best muscians at their respective instruments was cool as well...but Neil is a fucking god...
so my freshman year in high school I won luxury box tickets to a rush show through a school sponsored event...sold them to my drum teacher...wish I hadn't...but my first Rush show was Presto in 1990 and have only missed 1 I think since then...
Dins...yes Pantera...HOLY FUCK...Vinnie Paul is a MONSTER...I used to play Primal Concrete Sledge over and over...love Vulgar Display of Power (Hollow is one of my favorites) love Far Beyond Driven (5 minutes Alone, Shedding Skin), even love Trendkill (13 Steps To Nowhere and Suicide Note Part 2)...yes old Metallica before they became pussies and fuckers due to Napster...I stopped after the Black Album...but Master and Ride The Lightining are my two favorites...I mean Disposable Heroes, Creeping Death, Call of the Kutulu...WOW...
also Anthrax from back in the day was bad ass...Indians, EFILNICUFECIN, etc...Charlie was BADASS...
anyway wish more people on this board dug the hard shit...but oh well...
