Obama gives first TV interview to Arabic network

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama gave his first formal television interview as president to an Arabic cable TV network, telling Al-Arabiya that when it comes to Middle East matters "all too often the United States starts by dictating."

Obama taped the interview with the Dubai-based network Monday as his envoy to the Middle East, former Sen. George J. Mitchell, set out for an eight-day trip to the region and elsewhere. The interview complemented the new administration's first efforts to reach out to Arab leaders in the region, who have been wary at best of U.S. efforts to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

Obama said he felt it important to "get engaged right away" in the Mideast and had directed Mitchell to talk to "all the major parties involved." His administration would craft an approach after that, he said in the interview.

"What I told him is start by listening, because all too often the United States starts by dictating," Obama told the interviewer.

The president reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel as an ally, and to its right to defend itself. But he suggested that Israel has hard choices to make and that his administration would press harder for it to do so.

"We cannot tell either the Israelis or the Palestinians what's best for them. They're going to have to make some decisions. But I do believe that the moment is ripe for both sides to realize that the path that they are on is one that is not going to result in prosperity and security for their people," he said.

Obama added: "There are Israelis who recognize that it is important to achieve peace. They will be willing to make sacrifices if the time is appropriate and if there is serious partnership on the other side."

Obama stopped short of giving a timetable, but he said he is certain progress can be made.

Oh ya, and look at what the petty little dictator has signed into executive order in his first week.

Doing a TV interview is appeasement?

Go fuck yourself.

Here I go.

The CinC giving an interview to the Muslim world presenting and more humble and "nicer" facade is a strategic gamble. No more or less a strategic gamble than presenting the Cowboy facade Bush did.

We had, Clint Eastwood in "Unforgiven" and now we have Carradine in "Kung Fu". Both, could and would, kick ass.

The fact this facade is presented subsequent the attack in Pakistan where it's been alleged U.S. drones killed innocent civilians (because the targets use them as shields) isn't a surprise.

Overall, it will take time to see if our "Good Cop, Bad Cop" routine works. I don't think it will. The other side expects total capitulation. Until we as a country have the will to engage in a war requiring total capitulation from the other side. It really would be best to withdrawal and mind our own business.

But Obama is doing the responsible thing, in my opinion.

Just trying to keep a positive outlook on the President of the United States. Now, it's time to pull together.

Cynics perceive his statements as mere "show" for Obama's constituents back home more than any "message" to the Muslim people.

You're not a cynic are you ? ARE YOU ?

No worries.

I have it on good authority that if the USA apologizes to Iran for all the wrongs we've committed against them, they'll very likely forgive us.

Good news, eh?

Al-Arabiya is the Middle East equivalent of Radio Martí.

But you all knew that, right?

He might as well have been giving an interview to Fox.

Umm, no. Maybe you want him to give an interview to Fox because it will cause his base to engage in violent uprising. But Fox to Obama's base is worst than Al Jizzeera in their eyes.

There is no spirit of "uprising" in American society.

You people may grumble a little, but at the end of the day, you will take it and shut the fuck up.

Ha. I don't think the National Guard is going to be put on standby for when the Aunt Tillys in Ohio can't get reception on their 1983 25" RCA console TV's. What are they going to do? Call a cab and then collectively start swinging their canes and walkers down at the local free TV station?

Seriously, who the fuck has a TV these days that can't receive a digital signal?

It's pretty expensive, around $120 month for digital cable with 12 HBO channels and all their "on demand" stuff . I also have their high speed "turbo charged" internet. Times are tough and I get zero overtime these days....

Direct TV sent me an offer for 1 year at 29.95 a month. I haven't called them yet, as I'm afraid I won't get the same quality of service.

Pretty sure that DSL service doesn't compare with cable for speed and reliability. But then I really don't know.

Can't get DSL here anyway.

I had cable for years, but switched to DirecTV 7 years ago. I can’t picture ever going back to cable (here, it’s Charter). I have a DSL line which has also been dependable as hell. You gotta get DirecTV, Whitey, because then you can also get the NFL package and watch some professional football.

Seems like pretty typical Flyover understanding of technology.

I don't have a digital TV (nor do I need one). But heck, if Time Warner is passing them out free, I might have to look into it.

Hey Goobs, take a big ol guess what the "L" at the end of "DSL" stands for?

It's the grammatical equivalent of calling Whitey a "stupid dumb moron" (not that it isn't warranted in this thread, just grammatically incorrect, is all).

In very recent years, most of the big cable ISPs have made decent upgrades to their networks. Prior to that, there was no comparison of reliability between cable and DSL -- DSL ran away with that one in a landslide. Around here (albeit the most wired-up (and wireless) place in the country), I think I can still get a DSL that's just as fast as cable, for less money (although I think I heard of Comcast offering both a higher and lower speed package than what they've offered for years... cracks me up that people think they need 8+ meg download speeds, although it's nice if you do movies over the web, but certainly not neccessary).

In your case, it probably stands for “Lips”, as in “Dick Sucking Lips”. Because the term “DSL line” is used so infrequently that it only gets 647,000 hits on Google. Take your tedious little pet peeves and shove them up your ass.

What I’m saying, you fucking drone, is that it has become so common for people to refer to it as a “DSL line” that it’s become a part of the lexicon. I know a guy that installs the damn things that refers to it as a DSL line.

Not that I give a shit but I've only heard it referred to as Cable vs. DSL.

"What's your ISP connection ?"

"I have Cable"

"Oh I have DSL"

Rarely hear the "line" part.

It's a Digital Subscriber LINE. (Usually an Asynchronous Digital Subscriber line, but abbreviated to DSL, since as a general rule, the type of digital transmission doesn't æffect the end-user.)

Do you say "the NFL League"?

"PTA Association"?

"T1B Board"?

Well Goober, the one link to Wiki, shows that DSL originally stood for "digital subscriber loop" so throwing a "line" in there wouldn't sound so redundant I suppose.
