Re: Dins - Are You Near Portland?

Not in the Portland city limits, thank goodness (oppressive tax structure in the city. They used to charge you a fat extra tax on your cell phone for the privlige of living in the city proper, stuff like that). I live a couple of miles "over the border," but I'm closer to downtown than a good chuck of people who do live in the city itself. I drive a couplefew minutes (depending on the gridlock in my hood) to see the "Entering Portland" sign.Sudden Sam wrote:I'm sure you've mentioned your general area of residence, but my memory is flawed and basically fucked, so I can't remember.
But for all intensive purposes, might as well call it Portland. Besides, as far as local cred goes, my mailing adress doesn't matter -- my birth certificate says Portland... local cred is a weird thing with the transplants here. People seemed shocked when they ask the Transplant Question: "Where are you from?" Always folowed with "Really? I meet so few of you."
Anyway, Ian McLagan (Small Faces and Faces) and his Bump Band will be in Portland May 7 at the White Eagle Saloon, if you're interested.
Can't recall if I've been to the White Eagle or not. That's in a part of town that's really benefitted from the gentrification thing, and until recent years was definitely the ghetto.
The White Eagle is yet another old building the McMenamins took over and made pimp (like the better known Crystal Ballroom). The Not-So-Little-Woman lives right up the road from there, making getting to a bed after drinking a little more plausible... because there's few things as fun as walking through rough neighborhoods (although a shadow of their former "glory") late at night when drunk.
BTW-absolutely nothing to do with anything, except it came up in conversation the other day...
In the background of that pic, you can see the arches of the Freemont Bridge. I could be mistaken, but I believe that bridge span holds the record for the largest object mankind has ever lifted. They built that bigazz bridge outside of the shipping channels and whatnot in one piece, and used a whole shitload of cranes on platforms to put it in place with one fell swoop. I believe thatwas in 1974, and no one has attempted to lift anything that large since then.
Like I said -- nothing to do with anything, it just had relevance to a RL conversation. Had a hard time researching as to whether it's still the biggest lift, but I got the impression it was. Strange way to build a bridge, regardless. But they didn't want to interrupt port traffic to build the new span.
