Cal Hires Andy Ludwig as Offensive Coordinator
February 20, 2009

Andy Ludwig, who is considered one of the nation’s top offensive minds and has more than 20 seasons coaching at the collegiate level, has joined the University of California coaching staff as offensive coordinator, Golden Bear head coach Jeff Tedford announced Friday.

Last season, Ludwig served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah, helping the Utes to a perfect 13-0 record, a 31-17 victory over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and a No. 2 national ranking in the Associated Press poll. He also tutored Utah quarterback Brian Johnson to Mountain West Conference Offensive Players of the Year and Sugar Bowl MVP honors.

One of five finalists for the FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year Award in 2008

Ludwig’s Utah offense ended the 2008 regular season first in the Mountain West and 15th nationally in scoring offense (37 points per game)

Ludwig shaped the career of Carr, who led the nation in passing yards (4,839) and touchdowns (46), was a Heisman Trophy finalist and won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm and Sammy Baugh awards. Ludwig also mentored Billy Volek, who set the NCAA record for lowest career and season interception percentage.

Under Ludwig, Kellen Clemens had the best sophomore season ever by an Oregon quarterback. He would later go in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft to the New York Jets. Wide receiver Sammie Parker set Oregon game, season and career records for receptions, while Ludwig also showcased 1,000-yard rushers Onterrio Smith and Terrence Whitehead.

Cal Poly ranked seventh in the country in total offense in 1997 when Ludwig led the Mustang offense, averaging 455.0 yards per game and quarterback Alli Abrew led the nation in passing efficiency.

Cal fans had been praying that Tedford would get rid of Frank Cignetti (most predictable OC I've EVER seen)

To think what he (Andy Ludwig) did to that vaunted Alabama SEC defense in the Sugar Bowl with 1 and 2 star players....

... I can only imagine what he'll do with the 4 and 5 star players at Cal.

This is the hire that will challenge them as student/athletes.

Very often we can since our starting TE comes from Kal and we did get Ricky Williams from SD as well. 3.65 would not get him into Texas. The only way he gets into Texas is if he is in the top 10% of his class. Now of course as an athlete he qualifies enough to make it in under NCAA rules but as an Athlete he didn't qualify to get an offer from Texas, or for that matter Oklahoma, or LSU.

You see when a Texas kid gets an offer from one, he is generally pretty good, if he gets an offer from two his is extremely good, if he holds an offer from all three then he is elite. You boy holds no offers so no one is impressed.

The word is getting out... California is the place to be.

We all have our ways of sizing someone up and their first impression.

I have always taken my first impressions based on how someone shakes my hand and how they speak. Can't use the first one since I have never met the kid, but I have heard him speak. Not positive IMO.

Lefty, I heard a radio interview last Sunday. It was an ESPN/NFL spot with a longtime local beat writer for the Bufallo Bills. He was on the show to discuss Marshawn's latest bout of dumbfuckery, following the announcement of Marshawn's latest arrest on the concealed weapons charge.

The guy was describing Marshawn's mother, and how at the time of Marshawn's signing by Buffalo she begged people to look past the initial impression Marshawn makes with his Ghetto Thug appearance. She said he's really a misunderstood kid.

Her point was to ask people to simply give her boy a chance and to not just judge the book by its cover.

This beat writer then went on to describe how the people of Buffalo are different than, say, the people of Marshawn's home town of Oakland. He attempted to dance around the subject as tactfully as he could but the point he was clearly making was that Ghetto Culture doesn't fly in Orchard Park and it doesn't fly with Bills fans. He said that Bills fans were already leery of the guy in the first place and then when he had his hit and run incident during his first off season he really soured people there with the way he handled it.

The feeling was that he handled it like a lying coward.

He then went on to describe how Marshawn has neve really overcome the initial impression he makes with his ghetto appearance, mainly due to the fact that he speaks so horribly. He's far too tied up in his "Oaktown" persona, which is symbolized by the giant "Oaktown" tat he has on his chest. He said Marshawn is mostly excluded from Bills' public appearances and speaking engagements, simply because the kid can't even begin to speak properly.

This writer contrasted the way Marshawn is viewed in Buffalo with the way other black Buffalo players such as James Lofton, Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas were accepted by Buffalo's fans and the Buffalo organization.

He made a comment that while he knows Marshawn a little bit he wouldn't claim to be an expert on the kid. As such he added that he wasn't prepared to say the kid wasn't bright, or that he's stupid. No, he wouldn't say that. He would however say that he can understand how people who are regularly exposed to the kid might get that impression. He also added that without a doubt Marshawn is a very immature kid who definitely has some major growing up to do.

He wasn't sure if Buffalo was the kind of place for a kid who still needs to grow up, as Buffalo's fans are very straight forward, blue collar types who don't appreciate boorish behavior by pampered athletes.

All of which is to say that Cal is no different than most any other school. They accept ghetto thug morons, as long as they're great athletes. Marshawn Lynch was a legitimate 4.0 student like Lax is Pete Carroll's chauffeur.

I agree, everyone lowers their standards for top athletes. Now that is not to say that all schools have the same standards. Many schools take the minimum standards set by the NCAA. Others like RICE have their own lowered standards for admission for athletes. I don't attend RICE if I don't block and catch like I did. Most schools have a clause in their admission policy to allow a few spots in the frosh class for students with "special skills." Schools like, RICE, Stanford, ND, Cal use this to get football players into the school.

Now there are some athletes that will never make it into RICE because they won't be able to cut it in the classroom.
