What in the hell is going on with Andre Smith?
Is this guy just stuck on stupid? Does he hate money?
I'm watching the NFL Network just now and they're announcing that Smith is flat out MIA at the scouting combine where he's scheduled to work out. These people are literally freaking out over this guy's absence and they're saying this latest bit of flakery combined with his brainfart leading into the SEC CCG is likely to see him drop down to the #3 OT in the draft...which will end up costing the guy well into eight figures over the course of his total contract.
He offered up an excuse that he hired a new guy to train him and he just wasn't ready yet for this combine.
Wtf? He's had more time than anybody to get ready for this combine and this draft. He knew when it was happening, he declared early, he missed the SEC CCG. He HAS to be ready for this thing.
Anybody have any knowledge of what's going on with this guy's mental state? Did he have some sort of blow up or break down there at the end, at Bama?

He is a dumbfuck with only a 5th grade education.
A big boy like that quits having to do his studies in the 6th grade when he starts playing school football.

Sam, most of the talk I heard had him originally going as the #1 tackle in the draft, but not as the #1 pick overall. Most of the talk will piss off Shoalzie since it has Detroit taking Matt Stafford at #1.
The consensus seemed to be that Smith was going to fall from being the #1 offensive lineman (who'd probably go to the Rams) to maybe the third or fourth offensive lineman taken. The result was going to be something in the neighborhood of a net loss of $12,000,000 or thereabouts.
That is one big dummy.
I'm also hearing that it may turn out that Mark Sanchez should've listened to Pete. If as expected Detroit takes Stafford then the only other teams in the top ten spots who might take Sanchez would be K.C. or, most likely, S.F, at number ten. However, S.F. still has Alex Smith, who was the #1 pick in the draft a few seasons ago. He's been hurt the last two seasons but now he's healthy again and with no more Mike Nolan there the feeling is S.F. wants another chance to recoup some of their investment in Smith.
If so, they may not want to drop even more $$ into another rookie QB. If S.F. should pass on Sanchez then the speculation is he could do a Brady Quinn type freefall, all the way down to the lower third of the first round.
The main reason? Only 16 major college starts. Nobody doubts the guy's physical tools, his skill set or his fundamentals. He's considered to be much brighter than Stafford, and more of a leader too.
People are leery though of taking such a relatively inexperienced guy with such a high pick. This theory goes that if Sanchez had returned for his senior season and had he knocked it out of the park in his senior season he'd be able to basically buy Bolivia once he signed for the 2010 season.
We'll see, but I tend to agree. If he falls out of the top ten then he blew it by coming out early. Really, if he falls all the way to S.F. at the ten spot I still think he blew it.

Watching the NFL network they mentioned something about detroit that made me shake my head.
of their last 53 draft picks, 30 of them are already out of the league. Not on another team, but out of the league.
No wonder they didn't win a game last year, they are worse than an expansion team.
Matt Millen = Isiah Thomas = Franchise killer

Considering how highly some of those 53 picks were drafted that's really saying something...

I didn't see Stafford play a ton in college, but I did watch his performance in the Cap One bowl vs MSU. His first half play was unbelievably horrible. He looked like a freshman qb at a D3 school. He stepped it up a bit in the second half and made some nice throws. But if he brings that kind of inconsistent and uninspired play into the NFL, he's going to bomb out pretty fast.

I'd say it paid off pretty well for the guy.
Re: What in the hell is going on with Andre Smith?
Well, the one trait that article mentioned as being the single best indicator of an NFL QB's future success or failure is throwing accuracy. By that measure Sanchez ought to be the #1 QB taken in this draft and Stafford definitely shouldn't be.
Stafford has JaMarcus Russell written all over him, except he's smaller and probably better motivated.
Sanchez has Jeff Garcia written all over him, except he's much more physically gifted. Sanchez actually reminds me a little of a Tom Brady, only he's more athletic and he has a bigger arm. He's also a more fiery, demonstrative leader. His basic personality and the way he carries himself, his polish and his charisma, that's where he reminds me of Brady.
Stafford reminds me of Jim Druckenmiller.

Re: What in the hell is going on with Andre Smith?
Well, things just got a whole lot iffier for Mark Sanchez. With K.C. just having signed Matt Cassell it's now down to Detroit with the #1 pick or S.F. with the #10 for Sanchez, otherwise it'll likely be a free fall down into the lower third of hte 1st round...
At this point I'll go ahead and say it. Unless Detroit takes Sanchez he blew it by coming out early. He's going to cost himself not just a ton of money but also a ton of experience and a ton of fun and great memories he could've had by playing his senior season.
