I'm really beginning to hate this guy. Pretty sure you haven't seen
this one before...

That was cool. But this cover of "Because We Ended As Lovers" with Billy Sheehan is absolutely sick.

Yep, gotta love seeing the
bass player doing the main melody line, including the bent notes...
Bsmack, go to
http://www.tonemerchants.com
On the upper right, click on "Toned In."
Enjoy...
'Spray, the last time I tried to show you these Tone Merchant clips you said you couldn't get 'em to work. They're working now. You don't need to do anything more than click on the "Toned In" link.
You probably haven't gotten to see GG play any slide yet so you need to check out clip 11 and both you and Bsmack need to check out clips 9 and especially clip 14. In addition to the chicken' picken' on clip 7 these are just not things your garden variety "shredder" ever tackles. His use of space and phrasing on clip 13, in a pure jazz vein, christ...
Rarely does he ever flip his hair back, either, Mgo!

It's the Harlem Globetrotters of music. Total masturbatory schlock.

Watch enough clips and then take another stab at it, Mgo. He does so much, so well, with so much taste, in so many styles, that to try to label the guy as "masturbatory shlock" is one of the most ignorant things you've ever posted.
I guess to you jazz is masturbatory shlock, and fusion, and all instrumental music, period.
I'm beginning to think that you're one of those people who feel only slow, simple music can express emotion. Or music with lyrics. You must really get off on all those heartfelt performances on American Idol.
Brilliance is passion, Mgo, it's not shlock. Shlock is something performed poorly, with poor intent.

'Spray, yep, I literally just saw that one for the first time, before I checked back on this thread.
That blue Suhr Strat he's got there, that's pretty damn close to my idea of the perfect guitar, with the other being this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TINt-TjU ... re=related
That clip there is probably something Mgo might recognize as "emotion," since it's slow and simple.
Funny thing, this notion that certain types of technically difficult instrumental music are "musical masturbation."
All music is masturbation. Mozart was mentally masturbating when he came up with his music, same as John Mayer, the Flaming Lips or Guthrie Govan.
Some people are just better at it than others.
'Spray, make sure and check out clips 11 and 14.

Check out the way he drops a little bit of "Crossroads" into the middle of the solo of "Fives."

Nice try. Well really not so nice.
Go back to glomming carp and having sex with your cousins. This board is Way over your head.

Wow. What would the odds have been that we'd see a fake TVO sighting and an Mvscal sighting in a guitar thread...

Take Magoo's taste in music with a grain of salt, he thinks MGMT is cutting edge... make that a whole block of salt.
But... I'll have to sorta' agree with him here. Those clips did nothing for me. Granted, I didn't have the patience to listen to more than 30 seconds, but that was enough. I don't have to listen to more than 30 seconds of MGMT to know that it sucks.
Brilliance is passion...
No, it's not.
One can be as passionate as 'tart trying to save souls, mtool giving directions, or Scott handing out stock market advice, and still not be brilliant about it.
Brilliance is mv dressing down some poor schmuck who
thought he knew something about WWII, or other assorted subject matter, and doing it with a cold
dispassion.

Mvscal, looking at your post total, fuck, you've been busy. You're bound to miss something now and again...
TVO never seems to post anymore under his old TVO nic. It's pretty much just Moving Sale these days and the old TVO certainly has more than 30 posts.
Bsmack, since you found the Billy Sheehan/Jeff Beck clip I thought you might like this one too...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg0JSCpjlXw&NR=1
I've posted it here before but maybe you missed it. It's the single best impromptu bass/guitar jam I've ever seen.

This guy is not human.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R12pIcYoKAc&NR=1
Check out how he seamlessly transitions from one blues legend to another.
Starts out with clapton. Yup, that's clapton.
BB KIng. Yup. You'd never know it wasn't BB.
Albert Collins. Nails it.
SRV. Holy mutherfukking shit. It is Stevie. The tone is so dead on perfect that it is scary.
Same for the rest.
Definitely not human.
Judging by his unkempt hippie look, I'd say there is about a 90% chance dude is jesus H fukkin Keerist himself.
I'd loose all that nasty stuff mvs wrote about JC, from your sig, van.

No, it isn't, so shut up until you've invested enough time in the guy to make an intelligent statement about him.
Listening to one GG clip for thirty seconds is like basing your entire opinion of Eliza Dushku on a few of the red blood cells from her menses.
GG covers so much ground that merely hearing thirty seconds of the guy is like basing your opinion on
War & Peace on your dislike of the letter Q.
WW wrote:I don't have to listen to more than 30 seconds of MGMT to know that it sucks.
Screw Michigan briefly explained MGMT to me. I've never heard them. Couldn't tell you whether or not they suck but from what I've been told I can pretty much guarantee that on the evolutionary scale of music they're down their with frogs lurching around in the mud and GG is a U.S.A.F. pilot strafing Tikrit while doing the New York Times crossword puzzle...

I didn't say passion is brilliance. I said brilliance is passion.
There's a huge fucking difference. WW, I worded it that way on purpose. I knew someone would jump on it otherwise, since one can certainly be a passionate dullard.
You though, you threw yourself on the grenade anyway.
Brilliance is mv dressing down some poor schmuck who thought he knew something about WWII, or other assorted subject matter, and doing it with a cold dispassion.
Demonstrable brilliance requires passion, more often than not. In GG's case, absolutely. One doesn't arrive at his unique level of demonstrable brilliance without first having had a lifelong passion. In just about any field of endeavor brilliance of the type exhibited by GG must first be fed by passion.

Why yes as a matter of fact. still got the same filthy hippie dew and everything. this time around he has an english accent and can petty much do anything he wants to with a stratocaster.
I'm gonna search through youtube and see if I can find a clip of him healing a leper with that fukking thing.

I'll say this for you Van. You are a passionate poster. But considering the 3 edits it took you to get that quote feature thingy right, I'll put brilliant as well as "flawless" on indefinite hold.
I shall substitute the terms "hard working" and "industrious".... as well as entertaining.
Serious question: Do you even have a job or are you like on disability? The tomes I've scrolled thru lately lead me to believe you've got nothing but time on your hands. Must be nice.

That's not what you said the first time so you can't be saying it again now.
You are correct though. Passion can certainly exist without brilliance. Every Islamic Fundi rally and every Kiss concert is proof of this.
Brilliance can also exist without passion, though it's far more rare. Demonstrable brilliance in a given discipline, such as mathematics, painting, law, porn or guitar, those things usually require passion before one exhibits brilliance.
One doesn't wake up one day and simply decide to do this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAG-kX_IlUw
...much less this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMJH1r_YSaM
...simply by being born with brilliance. No, it takes a lifetime of passion for one's craft before one gets to the point of being able to do these things.
I'll say this for you Van. You are a passionate poster.
See...passion without brilliance, Exhibit A.
But considering the 3 edits it took you to get that quote feature thingy right, I'll put brilliant as well as "flawless" on indefinite hold.
I kept having a fuck up occur with the quotes function. I finally broke down and reconstucted it, piecemeal, section by section, until I got it right.
Also, here's a little secret for you, since you seem fascinated by my edit totals. I don't use a spell checker. What I do is I post something and then once I see it here on the board I then look it over for typos and other fuck ups. Then I go back and edit it, as necessary.
For some reason I "see" errors better once the post is on the board. I tend to miss them in my submission field.
I shall substitute the terms "hard working" and "industrious".... as well as entertaining.
I have my moments.
Serious question: Do you even have a job or are you like on disability? The tomes I've scrolled thru lately lead me to believe you've got nothing but time on your hands. Must be nice.
It's not nice. You can have it.
I'm on leave, taking care of Susan (my wife), who just had another operation.
