The fact that the Vatican deems this act punishable is simply another demonstration of how archaic some of their views and doctrines are still to this day. Perhaps they should check to see if the abortion was done by means of witchcraft.

I doubt this would offend anyone at any rate. Being a Catholic is basically saying that you pick and choose your own path from an ethical standpoint...because there certainly is no leadership in that regard. "Leadership" in Catholicism seems to refer more to the process of shuffling wrongdoers into dark corners than it does some sort of morality or system of ethics.

If you were looking for some sense of right or wrong, when you knocked on a Catholic door, you found an empty house. Sorry you had to find out in such dramatic fashion.

If the doctor takes communion he might be struck down by lighting on the spot.

I'd be interested in some response from dedicated Catholics. I know some very good people who are Catholic. They spend their free time doing community service, helping others and go to their church regularly. Their priests are sinners, yet they are held up as higher than the layman. Why? And why don't you ever hear them question these stances by their church?

As I have stated here before - my parents are good people who are also Catholics. Their faith isn't something that they generally spend much time interpreting. It's just something they grew up with. Most American Catholics are very similar. It's less a living faith than it is a cultural touchstone - like having a regional accent, or backing a sports team. There is no reason to pay close attention to the gobbledygook that spews forth from the Vatican or from the nation's Catholic "leadership". Most Catholics are well familiar with the need to think things through for themselves, in response to the void in moral leadership - but they are unwilling to break with the broken organization for sentimental or cultural reasons. Some folks actually like being associated with something so flawed - it serves as a backdrop for them to think well of themselves personally. "Yep, I'm a Catholic, but I'm one of the good ones"...etc.

It's not always easy to live the well-considered life. It's far easier to huddle under a tent, even if the floor underneath is ripe with a carpet of dung. Most folks like to do the easy thing.

Yes it does need a defense. This girls life was in danger. In a place where abortion is illegal except in cases like this, obviously the doctors thought she needed the abortion. Sorry, but we aren't living in the middle ages anymore.
