All that matters is what will this do to Dins's drinking buddies?

Seriously though, while the article makes light of the effect this decision will have on Oregon's recruits I still have to wonder how many of those guys feel like they just got the wool pulled out from under them?

Oughtta be an interesting trip into Autzen this season. Did Bellotti max out Oregon's potential or did Bellotti prevent Oregon from reaching it?

Tough question. Oregon thrived like never before under Bellotti...

interesting. as far as recruits, they had to know it was gonna happen sometime soon.

yeah, i don't get the implication that Kelly is the guy for UO to take the "inevitable next step"...since before Belotti UO was a mostly a bottom feeder on the order of pre-Snyder K-State.

If he still wants to coach, I wouldn't mind seeing Bellotti on the sidelines at ND. Not that I think it'll happen, but . . .

I thought I'd read somewhere that Bellotti's plan was to step down as coach in order to become OU's AD...

If he still plans on coaching then why would he leave Oregon now? He's got that program on an upswing, so why leave now?

I don't think his immediate plans include coaching again.

But you're right in that Bellotti was a much better skipper that Brooks. Brooks was at Oregon 10 years before he started winning games thanks to quarterback Bill Musgrave to led the Ducks to a couple bowl games and a beatdown of Ty Detmer's BYU team the year Ty won the Heisman. Then Brooks cashed out with the Rose Bowl appearance and Bellotti took over and Oregon got consistently better. Bellotti's relationship with Phil Knight, other boosters and the media has been as important as Bellotti's coaching abilities, which aren't always great, but not bad. Bellotti had two really good looks at the big price in 2001 (screwed by BCS) and 2007 (screwed by Dixon's injury).

Chip seems like a good X and O guy but in today's landscape a head coach needs other qualities. Bellotti had them, we'll see if Chip does.

Looks like the rumors of Bellotti leaving sooner rather than later were true and they just wanted to get a little ways past signing-day before announcing.

Kelly seems like a quality offensive-mind, kinda cool that a guy who was a 1AA-OC not that long ago is now getting the reigns of a name program. Some guys just need a chance to shine.

Before Oregon made him "their guy," a whole buncha big name schools with job openings were coming a-calling. Apparently, his talents weren't going unnoticed by D1 ADs.
