Five observations from Oakland's minicamp

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- After attending Oakland's minicamp on Friday, I came away with five observations about the team as it stands in early May:

Give McFadden the ball: The Raiders have won a league-low 24 games the past six years and they are very much in the rebuilding phase. But there are some nice players on this team. Second-year running back Darren McFadden is one who stands out. Just watching McFadden glide through the field, you can tell he can be a special weapon. He is likely never going to be an Adrian Peterson-like workhorse. That is not his game. But he can be a game breaker and give Oakland a Reggie Bush-like presence. With Justin Fargas and Michael Bush in the backfield, Oakland can afford for McFadden to be a specialized player. He was bothered by injuries often last season and he was never unleashed. Oakland has to find a way to make McFadden, the No. 4 overall player taken in the 2008 draft, a difference-maker.

Russell has a long way to go: The early portion of JaMarcus Russell's career has been blemished by his inconsistency. He showed those inconsistencies during the minicamp. On some plays, Russell appeared lost and others he seemed fine. He has a rocket arm, but he still has to work on his touch and his decision-making. The Raiders want Russell to work on all aspects of his game. He has a chance, but he is far from being out of the woods. He can still be a big draft bust.

The young receivers need to step up: The Raiders cannot count on Javon Walker helping them. He had another knee surgery this offseason and won't be ready until training camp. Three of the past four seasons have been disrupted by injuries for Walker. It would be unrealistic for Oakland to believe Walker will become an impact player for them. Thus, the youngsters have to come through. It begins with top pick Darrius Heyward-Bey. He was uneven in the minicamp. The book on Heyward-Bey is that he is inconsistent. He must prove otherwise and make a quick impact. Also, Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens must continue to develop or Russell is not going to have a reliable receiving group once again.

Asomugha is a bright light: He is the face of the franchise. Signing Nnamdi Asomugha to the three-year, $45 million deal this offseason was a big move by the Raiders. Yes, he is expensive, but Asomugha is worth it. He is a true shut-down cornerback and he is a smart player. The Raiders haven't won much, but it isn't Asomugha's fault. He is a top-flight player.

Neal will help: One of the best attributes Al Davis has had over the years was finding veteran players who still had enough in the tank to help Oakland. Lorenzo Neal may be the latest key veteran addition in Oakland. Neal, who signed with Oakland on Friday, is in his 17th season and eighth NFL team. He is known as one of the greatest blocking fullbacks in NFL history. Even though he is 38, he is still playing at a high level. The Chargers missed him last season and he helped Baltimore's offense. With Oakland's combination of strong running backs and a weak offensive line, this is a fine match.

Give McFadden the ball:

Yes.
Can McFadden stay healthy?
Disappointing rookie season.
Shows tremendous ability, though -- 4.4 per carry, excellent hands, 9.8 per reception, dangerous weapon.
Oakland has a chance to have a really dynamite rushing attack, with he, Bush and Fargas.

Russell has a long way to go:
Yes.
53% passer last year -- sucks royally.
In the NFL, you have GOT to move the chains.
My prediction, as I sit here in May, is that J. Garcia will start at least 6 games for us this year.

The young receivers need to step up:
Yes.
Leading wideout had ... 22 receptions last year -- BARF.
We've got no vet receiver on the roster we can rely on.
Couple that with JaMarcus still learning the ropes ... well, we BETTER run the shit out of the ball.

Asomugha is a bright light:
Yes.
Very obvious.
No comment needed.

Neal will help:
I hope so.
What is he, like 53 years old?
We've been lacking a REAL FB presence for a long time.
If he can give us SOME reps and show the young fellas how to be a pro, good signing.

When I look at Oakland's defensive personnel, I am worried.
There are question marks everywhere, and I don't see that they've done much at all to help improve against the run ... something that they have struggled with forever, it seems.
And there is almost NO depth defensively.
I just see a whole lot of ... HOPE.

Offensively, we have pieced some things together and gained some experience, so I'm hopeful we can improve over last year's shit performance.

Special teams were pretty darn good last year.
Let's keep that going.

Tom Cable?

Good luck and GO RAIDERS!

4)No comment nessecary.
5)Great pickup. Too bad there's nothing but shit surrounding him.

Good luck. you'll need it. 3-13/4-12

Only because the rest of that division sucks ass.

There are worse divisions. NFC West comes to mind first.

Neal is a stud. The Blots should never have let him go. Just ask LT.

I'll have to go with Diotard on this one. The AFC West is the weakest, but (aside from the NFC East), it's the most compelling.

Nobody knows how anything is going to shake out in any division.

To pretend you know otherwise means you are a clueless dumbfuck.

It's rather certain that the Chiefs and Raiders will be battling for the worst record in the AFC. If not the NFL.

I think that will be Denver.

They've got a lot to overcome.

They're replacing a two-time Super Bowl winning coach who, despite a lot of criticism in Denver, kept stability and competetiveness in that organization for almost 15 years.

The starting QB slinging the ball well downfield was about all Dungver had going for it last year, so what's the first thing the new coach does when coming into town?

Run THAT guy OUT of town. lol

Kyle Orton ..?

Oooooh kay.

The mule defense was among the worst in the league and I don't see that they've done a helluva a lot so far this off-season to imagine that they'll do anything but once again suck hardcore.

I could see Denver drafting in the top three next year, and I see Oakland and KC both having better years.

Charger fan just became your bestest friend. How weird is that?

That's okay, whoever wins that division will still suck ass. No offense.

[zysdale]The biggest impediment to Jamarcus ever living up to his draft pick is his poor work ethic. People I know from Oakland who now somewhat know the guy are saying he's more into going to clubs and enjoying the life as a good looking young millionaire brother than in getting into shape, learning the playbook, learning his progressions, working on his poor fundamentals and otherwise becoming a real NFL QB.

Being the #1 pick and then getting that fat contract supposedly de-motivated him, big time. Some people who get those contracts feel a burning need to work their asses off, in order to live up to those contracts. Others see those contracts as proof they've already arrived. He appears to be in the latter group.[/zysdale]

Russell -- standing there among the 'duh QBs looking like he's pregnant,
while the 39 year old guy looks fit and trim.

He's big boned. Yeah.

Cable subltly called JaMarcus out, saying he needs to embrace what it
takes to be a winning QB in the NFL.

QB is one position on the field where success often comes by mastering the
intangibles more than the tangibles.

I'm pulling for Russell big time, but things are going to get interesting if the
offense struggles.

Great to see JaMarcus bought ... IN ... to the off-season training program.

Groovy.

pop, JaMarcus did buy into the off season training program. You just weren't privy to the fact that this year they decided to change it up a bit. This year, it was held at Home Town Buffet, and the winner of the camp's 40 Yard Dessert Row Dash was given a blank check gift certificate to JaMarcus's favorite store, Gaudy Bling-B-Us.

Could be worse.....we could've drafted superbust Matt Whineart's sissy ass (This pathetic spoiled bitch admitted to not reading his playbook-RACK Warner's old ass punking him out of a job) instead of the other bust in Huff. I shudder to think of Whineart's popgun arm slinging ducks to a soon-to-be-injured-trying-to-outjump 3 DB's Calvin Johnson with 4-5 int's a game instead of JaBelly slinging bullets. I'm just happy as hell that we have the MINIMAL number of USC picks (all busts) on this team, although TitDale White and Mike Williams could give JaBloated a serious run for his money in the Manboob arena.

Uhh, Hair Gel, go ahead and peruse this year's NFL's rosters. Including this season's NFL draft, USC will have the most players in the NFL. Number one.

Pretty sure that means you've got quite a few successful USC draft picks in there.

Anyway, you retard, even your most productive RB in recent seasons is from USC.

Also, try not to be a completely gullible lemming. Leinart most certainly never said, "I never read our playbook!" That's just absurd. He couldn't even get through a practice if he didn't know the playbook; not at USC, not for the Arizona Cardinals.

As for getting beaten out by Warner, well, most QBs in the NFL would get beaten out by a two time (nearly three time, after last season) league MVP and Super Bowl MVP. Also, Warner gets paid a lot more than Leinart.

All things being equal, which they aren't anyway, who would you play at QB, if you were Arizona's management? Would you start the guy making the big bucks, who has way more experience, or the lower paid kid who could benefit from sitting and learning at Warner's side while the organization wrings the last couple/few productive years out of their future HOF-er?

Try to think this shit through first, at least a little.

Face it, there are FAR MORE 'SC busts than players who have made it. Pussy conference, pussy school, pussy players (with a few deece ones here and there)
Thanks for proving my point, mv. There are a fuckload of 'SC busts for every 1 that is an impact player.

And its pretty obvious that somewhere along the line Vans scrawny bag of ribs ass got one of the neon grips he shamelessly peddles shoved straight up his ass by a Raider Nation member. Save your bullshit about the "costumes" too, Van-the 'Nation homeboys down in my hometown of LA and here in Dego roll in to watch a game and knock your fucking head off if you bump your ballsmokers. I'd love to see your hick ass roll down here and catch a game and run your mouth. Bitch.

Stick to styling product advice. You clearly don't know anything about football, the draft, or USC's players in the NFL.

Oh, and good luck with JaMarcus. And Heywood-Bey. And all your other big talent/no skill/no heart high draft picks and free agent signings.

Fuck, good luck being a cartoon character Raider Fan, period. We may as already begin talking about it: Who are you eyeing with next year's Top 5 pick?

That was beautiful. The Detroit Lions one was killer too, especially the fan on the parade route who pulls a gun, and Calvin Johnson holding up those placards.

"Anywhere...except Oakland."
