Washington Redskins win court case on nickname

A Federal Appeals court has upheld a lower courts ruling that allows the Redskins to continue using their nickname. Seven Indians sued saying the name is racist. They were seeking an undisclosed amount of money and for the Redskins to have to stop using the name immediately.
The court ruled that the seven indians waited to long to bring suit. Instead if the name is currently offensive, then it must have been offensive years ago too. As such this suit should have been brought up decades ago. But by not being offended for years, they have basically agreed that the name is ok.
For me, if you don't like the name, boycott or picket the organization. I don't think you will get very far but that is what you should be doing instead of wasting court time. We do have the right of free speech here at least for the time being. If something is racist then call them on it but don't go expecting someone else to give you money because of it.

Assuming it is indeed racist...
Which law does this violate exactly? The mythical right some people have unilaterally decided they have to not be offended, at the expense of an actual, real, Constituionally defined right enjoyed by everyone?
As long as Americans turn a blind eye to the Thought Police trying to run everyone's lives, it will only get worse.
As Lefty mentioned, if you don't like it, organize a boycott... which used to be the American Way, before the PC crowd decided they know what's best for everyone.

There are a lot more than just seven indians who think the name is racist. That's silly. It obviously racist and even many clear headed non-Indians can realize it. I don't know if I would say that the team should be forced to change the name though. But I don't feel comfortable supporting an organization that has shown such low regard for a certain group of people that way. Just a little common sense can go a long way. Do the right thing and change the name Washington. You could really gain a lot of national admiration if you did. It's just the way I see it.

How about the Washington Manifest Destiny, maybe they wouldn't be so offended.

I guess they would among the thought police. They could loose just as much from those fed up with the thought police and those tired of friviolus lawsuits.

Like Lefty said, at this point whatever admiration they'd gain from caving in would likely be blown away by the scorn they'd receive for being abject pussies.
The admiration would come from people who don't matter to their business. The scorn would come from football fans.
Dins is right. mvscal is right. As citizens of the U.S. we don't have an inalienable right to never be offended. If we did then rap music, network tv and this board would overwhelm our court system, and Dan Vogel would actually have time to try and pry people away from his wife's backside.

Exactly.
I don't know how many American Indians are NFL fans, but I doubt many of them are seriously offended by the nickname of Washingtons pro football team.

When I lived in Frisco, there was all this fucking hub-bub about the high school mascot name. They were the Frisco Coons. Big fukin' deal! Shoulda been called the Frisco Crackas as it's a pretty much caucasion town, at least back then it was. Now they are the Frisco Racoons. Any student or parent/fan who wears a piece of clothing at school or a school sponsored event bearing the word "Coons" on it will be removed from the premesis. All the racoons in Frisco rejoiced by partying at the P.F. Chang's dumpater the day that policy went into effect. They are now looking for reparations for all the years they were referred to as Coons rather than the proper Racoons.
True story.
Rack the Coons!

When I was just a young & impressionable whippersnapper attending USAF Tech School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, I saw bumper stickers saying "Lick the Cocks." I'm sure that'd go over like a fart in church these days.
