Josh Smith, would-be junior WR/KR, all-purpose yardage leader/mediocre receiver.....big play guy....uncle of Darrell Scott, instrumental in getting the nations #1 high school RB to Boulder a year ago...wants to transfer to someplace with a "rap music" major. i can't even do this situation justice...there's so much ambiguity and panic around here. Smith was kind of the charismatic public face of the Dan Hawkins era, got the mandatory long dreads/braids, pretty boy kinda...they put him on camera all the time on the coaches show and official AD site vids. he lists ASU (got a music buddy there), Oregon and USC (apparently...though i don't see him playing much there).
he's requested the transfer, and CU AD has only granted him a release to USC (where i don't think they have a scholly for him, he's a 3 star guy who can't run routes on a .500 team and apparently doesn't like to workout--i don't think Petey feels the need to screw Dan Hawkins). something's up here. fear is he will haul nephew Scott with him. I personally would be shocked if that happened. and, seems really petty of the CU AD to block the kid's transfer to ASU or wherever. or something not reported is going on. weird situation.
edit: and in the link, despite the institutional-ese of the AD about limiting releases at first as standard practice has not been the case in the recent transfer of a 3rd team, but somewhat touted QB or any of a half-dozen players from the basketball team in the last 3 years.

Just shoot any college that even offers a major in rap music.

I bet Mr. Scott is really pleased with his decision to attend CU now.

needless to say, that was coming from a mile away as would be a bank job for mom haha.
i think Scott has a good year for CU. if, and i mean IF, they can actually block someone off the LOS, stay healthy and Cody can keep people honest. what you read locally is they want to go "smashmouth" to whack out the Big XII's speed/spread D's. but, in today's football, if everyone knows you are going to run it and your QB is too short, immobile to see the middle of field on a check down.....you ain't running anywhere on an 8 men in the box. Franchione already got fired IMO for trying that same "cyclical thinking" type power running game to beat the spread "fad".
doesn't matter what you want to do, being one-dimensional on O or not playing D is what makes you lose. an 8 minute drive is disadvantageous when you are down 17 to spread-score-in-a-hurry-team in the 3rd quarter.
sin, Marcus Allen
Josh Smith led the nation in # of kickoff returns per game. that's not a stat you want.

i don't know that anyone really has a rap major. this situation is weird*. more to it than what's in the papers. i usually have pretty good info on CU sports with former students and the campus radio station connects....but, none of this makes sense. when nothing makes sense, you almost always think there's some woman thing.
*it's weird on it's own, but also weird in that it's such a big deal--like a referendum on the program. the kid was a decent player with big play ability and Darrell Scott's uncle. but, was not a great WR by any means. i don't think anyone would consider him as a top level WR in the conference. how he thinks Petey has a scholly for him is interesting.

now, hearing that bad blood with Hawk's staff and Erickson. previous ASU coach Dirk Koetter was the guy who made Boise a legit team/WAC and pre-WAC juggernaut. had former CU OC Helfrich (now at Oregon) as QB coach at ASU. Erickson also stole a couple CU verbals in Hawk's first year. it's Erickson so you have to wonder about the legality of it.
Hawkins somehow wants his staff to be the all-pacific northwest unappreciated from the 90's small school all-stars so there's the Boise lineage to protect as "ahead of the curve"...as Hawkins liked to put it in Year 1 (2-10).

I have a hard time believing the whole "music major" thing. I mean, c'mon. How many successful musicians actually have a degree in music? How many college grads with a degree in music actually go on to a successful recording career? If you're a genuinely dope MC, you'll get signed, regardless of whether you have a music degree. There's got to be something else to this...

It's a modern version of Basketweaving 101. I mean, how do you grade someone's "flow" on the mic? Who instructs these classes? Old Dirty Bastard?
....Cuz' I'm hell on the mic....yeah....hell on the mic...!
^^^^ B minus??? How about if I throw in some big-bootied bitches dancing aroud me whilst I announce that "Sucker MC's can call me Sire?"

Lots, if they're serious musicians, and that degree is from Berklee (Berklee, not Berkeley) or the USC school of music.
Rap music? Nah, I don't think hop-hop labels really care if you have a degree in hip-hop from Dins U.

I suppose a lot of the people who play in symphonies in major metropolitan areas probably have music degrees and pull in high five or low six figures, which certainly qualifies as "successful." If you can make a living by exclusively playing music, I would definitely consider that a success. Then again, I doubt any of us on this board could name even one person in their local symphony (if they even have a local symphony).
I was referring more to popular musicians. Not just rappers, but people who play rock, country, blues, punk, metal, etc. and have achieved success in those genres. I'm guessing the vast majority of them don't have a degree in music. And even if you include symphonies, orchestras, etc., I would still wager that the majority of people whose sole income comes from playing music do not, in fact, have music degrees.

I don't understand what you people have against a Rap major. Come on......have you seen some of the majors these "student" athletes are going for? General studies? Sports and Leisure Studies? What the fuck is that? You can't do shit with those majors. At least if you have talent, you can make a lot of money as a rapper. Then you can buy all kinds of gold chains, gold teeth, gold jewelry, etc..... and then once the money is gone you can turn around and sell yo' shit at Cash4gold.com. How much gold do you think a "general studies" major is gonna be able to afford to buy??? Exactly.

i suppose that if there was ever a time/place, i'd be remiss for not passing this along. given the irony that this cut lacks J-Fly (incoming CU recruits apparently, undaunted by the lack of a major) and the topic at hand...coupled with the venerable tradition at BTPCF of the occasional team hip hop vid. one recalls the early ATM vid, the multiple tOSU ones, Josh Jarboe come to mind perhaps there were others. needless junk shot at 2.36.

Yeah, but is college really the place to teach 18 year olds how to create rhymes at a 2nd grade level?
2nd grade level? Come on now, Sam........you trying to tell me this shit is 2nd grade???

Yep, I agree. I just googled "rap lyrics" and it took me all of 5 seconds to find lyrics as epic as those. I wouldn't have had any idea who the fuck those are if I didn't cheat.

The first one is "Boyz-n-the-Hood" by Eazy-E. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't know that. Classic song, but unfortunately, it's so played out that it's almost impossible to appreciate how great it was when it first came out. It's like the "Stairway to Heaven" of gangsta rap.
No idea on the second one, so I guess I get half credit. I'm not so good at math. What's 250 minus 4 bazillion?
