Maybe he was inspired by Obama's speech that blacks shouldn't just aspire to be rappers and ballers.

How 'bout old as hell Tom Watson in the lead?

That's a bigger story, IMO.

Watson in the lead at 59?
Incredible. He shot a 65 on Thursday.

Wonder if he could shoot his age.

You got that right.

Watson is a KC legend. Back in the day people used to joke that he was the 3rd major franchise here, ahead of the NBA Kings. It wasn't a joke. Seeing Tooom do this well at age 59 brings a tear to mine eye.
"I guess the memories are with me, all the wonderful memories I've had playing links golf," Watson said. "Walking down the fairways, walking up onto the greens, people showing their respect for me, showing my respect for them. It's been since 1975, 34 years I've played links golf. And it's a fabric of my life, I can tell you that.

"To be able to be doing what I'm doing out here, making a few lucky putts here and there and still feeling like I have a chance to win. ... that's pretty cool at age 59."
You go, boy.

I don't have a role model.

But if I did have to choose one, Tom would be a good candidate.

Well, him or George Brett.

No f'n way he pulls this off. The oldest man to ever win a major was 46... but I'm pulling for him.

WGARA about Tiger, anyway? He's the Michael Jackson of golf. pfft

Nahhhh, Nobody is as fukked up as Jacko. I was a tiger fan early in his career. Not a tiger haytah, but, when things aren't going well for him like that stretch he had friday, and he starts slamming clubs around, I get a little closer to becoming one.

Get some fukking class, pussy. It's golf. You're not supposed to have tantrums and start slamming your driver into the tee after you fukked up.

Hey, it doesn't matter who you are and how much jack you've got in the bank, pissed is pissed.

And if you're highly competetive, things can start gettin' slammed.

Unless Eldrick is taking it out on someone else, I gots no problem wit it.

Bull. fukking. shit.

Show me 1 clip of Jack slamming his driver like a little bitch. How 'bout Arnie or maybe Watson?

I guess those dudes just weren't highly competitive. :meds: :meds: :meds: :meds: :meds: :meds: :meds: :meds:

I guess it just the times we live in. There used to be class in pro sports. Too bad it's pretty much gone. Kinda reminds me of the quote from Jim Brown which I will probably fukk up.

"When you get into the end zone, act like you been there before."

You can celebrate or get pissed and still have class. Some can, anyway.

Tom needs to start draining some of these makable putts. Whatever you do, don't leave it short. It's got no chance if it doesn't get there.

All in all though, he's still solid from tee to green. I was kinda' expecting him to start to fold by now, but he's hanging tough.

I like that Fisher kid as well. He's like Charles Howell III with game. Retief Goosen would be kinda cool as well. And Boo Weekly winning would be utterly epic. But yea, if your first choice isn't Old Tom Watson, then you have no heart.

With only 5 guys shooting under par on Saturday...a +1 was a great score for Watson.

The forecast for tomorrow looks ugly...rainy and brisk winds.
http://uk.weather.com/weather/hourByHou ... m=1&flag=0

Anybody that can shoot around par on Sunday has a shot. Watson certainly isn't going to play a round like he did on Thursday...I think we'll see more like what he's done today and Friday...a mix of birdies and bogeys and playing near par golf. Anyone that can get to -5 should win but I have a feeling the winning score is probably going to be -2 or -3 at best.

Yes, I think so.

You're probably right, Arnie, Jack ... whoever, didn't slam their club, etc.
And they prolly don't dig it much if they see Eldrick do so.
Just as Tony Trabert, Ken Rosewall and John Newcombe didn't like it when Connors and McEnroe came around and started thrashin' shit around.

Oh well.

I've always liked genuine emotion shown in athletics.
So Eldrick gettin' hot doesn't bother me at all, and I can chuckle at it, even.
If it bothers you, ok.

What I don't like, is contrived dickery, like the end zone follies you mentioned.
I don't equate that to Tiger getting pissed off.

You are right, pop, contrived dickery is worse than uncontrolled rage, but, it still shows a lack of class.

What I would like to see is Tiger run into the end zone and bury his sandwedge into the helmet of some prancing monkey that just scored a TD.

I agree. One of the biggest sports stories of all time if he wins. Nicklaus winning at 46 was something. Watson winning at 59 would be simply astonishing. ABC has to love that a story like this has played out for the ratings since Tiger missed the cut.

if Watson pulls this off, it will be the most amazing sports achievement in history. Period. Name me one bigger. 59 years old? winning a major?!

The only thing I can think of in my lifetime that compares is Buster Douglas beating the sh*t out of Tyson. I watched that live and thought it was an amazing event at the time. I still remember where I was when I saw it.

I've thought for a while to try and compare something I've seen with what's going on right now and this is all I could come up with. Help me think of something bigger. Nickalus is there, but he was still relevent at the time, and 'only' 46. Hell, look at what Kenny Penny has done while he's 48. Some will say Jimmy Connors, but hell, he was in his late 30's (I know tennis is different)

... I might post back if I think of something

They touched on it during the broadcast this morning...this type of golf allows a guy like him to contend. He wouldn't have a prayer against the big hitters at a tourney back in the States on a long course in calm conditions. Watson knows that course better than any of the guys out there...he's only the one to play each of the four times the Open has been there.

You are right about the style of golf at the open. It's all about not making mistakes and making some puts. All the talent in the world ain't gonna save you when you are waist deep in that straw they call the rough.

That said, it's still the biggest thing evah in golf and likely sports in general.

Rack the fukk outta old tom.

Nice list, pops. The miracle on ice definitely belongs in the 1 spot, even if that old geezer holds on today.

ABC needs to hand over about half of their Open advertising revenue to Tom for this weekend. It will have double the viewers it would have had with tiger tossinganother trophy on the pile.

Doesn't really look like any guy is taking this thing by the horns other than the kid Wood. It might come down to which guy makes the least mistakes. Nasty hole for Fisher and he's still got some work to do...

With Fisher's gaffe on the last hole, it brought a large group of golfers back in the mix...anyone within 5 has to be considered in contention. Kinda trippy with the old man and the amateur now at the top of the leaderboard.

not only that, and i said yesterday on another board, he won the Dunhill Links a couple years ago.

the shot Fisher was ill-conceived (he's choking down on the club and lined up at the green with a lot of carry over more knee-deep junk)....but is easy to do over there. those grasses are diabolical. choking down on the club--ball above his feet--takes away any of the help the club shaft is going to give you making the shot all hand strength...which just compounds the problem.

For sure, it would be the most amazing achievement in golf history.

Not really sure you can compare it to any other sport or achievement, but who cares? It would stand on it's own merit and not need any other validation whatsoever.

Some honk on the golf channel put it best when asked what it could be compared to.... somewhere between Nicklaus winning the 1986 Masters and Neil Armstrong first setting foot on the moon, the anniversary of which is tomorrow, btw.

The talking heads get a boner at the idea of improbable things happening so it gives them something to gush over. As a regular schlub sitting in my recliner and sipping coffee...I just like watching things develop before my eyes and not know how it's going to turn out. All you'd ever want is something entertaining to watch for the next few hours...don't really care how it turns out. I don't know these people personally so you can't really pick favorites. The ideal finish is seeing the old man win it but seeing a kid like Wood win wouldn't bad either...just as improbable of a winner.
