Won't miss'em a bit.

Going on the air in the middle of a shooting war with your opinion that it is unwinnable is treason.

Good riddance, wally.

Loved the "You Are There" and "20th Century" stuff. Very informative and something lacking on main network TV these days for the most part.
Even so-- "today was a day like all days---filled with the events that alter and illuminate our times."
RIP Walter !
Oh--and I forgive you for not pronouncing February in the accepted manner and making your way part of our language.

He called it and changed public opinion. If not, where would we be?

No, he didn't "call it". Calling it would have been more like "Well, charlie did come in here for a road game and put up a good effort. And then we killed his ass".

Tet was a military failure, but, it was a political victory, thanks in part to "the most trusted man in America".

Not saying the outcome would have been different had he stuck to just reporting rather than editorializing, but, he sure the fukk didn't help things.

It's not the media's job to "help things".

When it's your fukking country, yes it is. And not only did he not help things, he misrepresented what happened and certainly helped things for the commies.

He's just pissed because he missed his chance to come home in a body bag.

You picked Tavis Smiley as an example?

Dude, he's the first journalist I'd waterboard.

Plus 10-15 years hard labour.

It was a much more civilized era

Compare Cronkite's elegant, respectful, but devastating critique of the Vietnam war in 1968...

It is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out, then, will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.

....with the incoherent rantings we hear on Fox News or MSNBC.

the truth

Good point, B-blood. Cronk was dead on with Vietnam. Who wasn't? Who actually thought such a rash and abominable assault on a distant land could somehow "succeed"? Perhaps General Curtis LeMay (aka General Jack D. Ripper) and similar demented lunatics? Uncle Walt did something at least. Sure, we'd have loved if he'd looked America in the eye and declared the Warren Commission a treasonous scam, and if he'd called some bullshit on the utterly nonsensical FBI official conclusion of the assassination of MLK, and how about if he'd really rode herd on the Reagan gang--surely the most brazen criminal entity to occupy the executive office until Cheney...and how about if he'd actually owned up to our vile dealings in the Middle East?

The fact that Avi immediately starts a warped meth dance on his grave reveals yet again his gnashing living hell. How sad that such people live and gasp through the day.

In fairness, that one ain't on Cronkite. Reagan got an extended honeymoon due to the assassination attempt, and Cronkite retired before the honeymoon was over, for all intensive purposes (Shoalzie reset intentional).

But they did reconstitute. Because they moved forward, constantly. There was no "quit" in the Vietnamese resistance and if you believe anything to the contrary, you pretty much are an empty paper bag.

When Ho was digging deeper, your boys, who wanted to go home to mom, were getting strung out on junk.

Eternally, you prove that you are completely envious of the resolve of your enemies, regardless of whether they won or lost.
Your "soft" nation, even in victory, completely embarrasses you. That's obvious.

Big fucking deal. The majority of engagements were with the VC, not the NVA. Also the overwhelming majority of sorties were flown over South Vietnam. This is a fact generally forgotten by Americans, if ever reported at all.

The harder you bombed targets in the South...the more operations you carried out against VC in the South (who had popular support), the more your fate was sealed.
