Hey Lefty, another rules question for ya...

OK, so I'm playing NCAA 10 the other night - Colorado vs. Penn St. I'm down 27-26 with :06 left in the game and I have the ball 1st & 10 at the PSU 36. I have a couple timeouts left, so I decide to run a quick HB dive just to center the ball for a long FG. The other guy comes out in a FG Block formation, and Darrell Scott gets outside and ends up taking it all the way in for a TD. But wait, there's a clipping penalty on me. My opponent obviously accepts the penalty, which I thought should result in an untimed down - 1st & 22 from his 48. But instead, the game just ends and I lose.

Is this correct? Can a game end on an accepted offensive penalty? Or did the dumbfucks at EA just screw me over again?

No way a game can end on an accepted penalty, negating a TD. A game can't end on a penalty, unless it's a mutual dead ball foul after time has already expired, or a celebration penalty after time has already expired, something like that.

The play you're describing? Not a chance.

That's exactly what I thought, but when I complained about this on one of my dorky video game message boards, a couple people chimed in claiming that the rule only applies to accepted defensive penalties, and that a game can, in fact, end on an accepted offensive penalty.

I thought it could end on an accepted offensive penalty.

Negating a game winning TD, from a play which took 26 seconds??

If that's the case, color me shocked.

Right answer. Games can only not end on a defensive penalty. This is on the offense, so ballgame over. Everyone knows this rule......come on now.

Frozen is nails as usual.

Game does not end in that situation, despite what Jon says. The defense has to accept the penalty as you said or you would win the game. Therefore 1 untimed down.

Van is close and prolly knows the situations, but just not spelling it out correctly. The rule is clear, any accepted penalty results in an untimed down (except for tries). Even mutual dead ball fouls. Example:

Cal is trailing SC late in the game by four. Best runs around the right side and finds no place to run, (same story all game). In an attempt to stop the clock he heads for the sidelines but time expires before he crosses the sideline. The SC SS blasts Best while both are out of bounds. One of the Cal OL comes over and shoves the SC SS. Two dead ball flags. Mark off the yards in order of occurance, one untimed down.

but Cal SHOULD win this game on the strength of better net punting average.

Ok, I stand corrected........

Let's say this exact scenario played out but there was 5 seconds left on the clock at the conclusion of the play. Does the clock stop? If not, that doesn't make any sense.

What do you mean does the clock stop? Of couse the clock will stop while they mark off the yardage, etc.

Do you mean to ask when would the clock restart after the penalty mark-off?

If that is the question then you have to go back to the play on which the foul occurred. In that case the ball became dead because the offense had the ball in their possession and in the defending teams endzone. Therefore the clock would not start again until the next snap.

You always go back to the previous play for clock status when enforcing a penalty. So had the runner been tackled in bounds short of the goalline then the clock would start on the ready for play signal from the referee.

Hope that answered your question.

sure, i really like San Francisco. it's one of few American big cities that aren't highway/car culture pavement bores. However, i also make really great gazpacho and ride a really cool fixie bike but don't feel the need to post pictures of them on a football board.

you pick your spots. i have a conventional road bike too. i'm just in it for kicks...there are riders who are balls to the wall around town. but IMO better here than Denver, i'd take my chance with some of the hills in town over being in Denver's traffic.

I think it was 0 for 8, but whose counting? That was hilarious. I nearly fell out of my seat laughing when I came back to check my picks after the games. I can't beat the spread, I just like to pretend I can........

I may think like an 8 year old but, unlike you, at least I don't have sex with them.
