Yeah, Allen Collins wrapping his car around a pole, killing his groupie and leaving him babbling from a wheelchair to a bunch of 'necks is all good and well, a fitting testimonial to the ethos and mind of that Southern land. But really, the case of his band mate Gary Rossington goes beyond all we thought we knew of the culture where books are used as shims to prop up the table with the TV. It seems Gary also followed that path of drugs and alcohol right down to the bottom--he literally couldn't play his guitar on the Lynyrd Skynyrd gigs ("reunion" shows with one original member, Ed King, who promptly died), but could only stagger out on stage for a faltering wave to the faithful. So...one day on the tour bus, the replacement guitarist's groupie gets jealous of Gary and stabs him while he's sleeping. So much for Southern hospitality.
