Don't you actually have to play a little bit before becoming Wally Pipp?

Not necessarily. Freshmen QB's tend to get benched from time to time due to inconsistent play. And maybe Barkley will be a bust. We won't know until he plays.

QB's don't tend to "bust" in USC's system, surrounded by USC talent. Barkley will struggle, because he's a freshman, but if he starts he likely won't lose the job.

No knock on Corp but I've been rooting for Barkley to just win the job and get this thing started. He's obviously the guy for the future and I don't want to see him sit two years, then pull a Sanchez and bail for the NFL after one full year starting. Corp has the advantage of having been in the system for awhile, to the point that I'm not entirely certain about starting a true freshman in Columbus, but other than that one game I'd just as soon see the Barkley era begin immediately.
Supposedly he's ahead of Palmer, Leinart, JDB or Sanchez, in terms of how quickly he's picked up and understood things. He's supposedly just blowing longtime observers away with his acumen and maturity, and he's supposed to be the most physically gifted freshman QB they've ever seen.
Let's just get it started.

Pat O'hara may be a more fitting nickname for Mr. Corp

do you really put Palmer in that group? he cut his teeth with Hackett's juggernaut.

True, Pete didn't have Palmer as a freshman, but still there are people who've seen them all come through the system, including Palmer, and the feeling seems to be that Barkley is special even among that group of pretty special college QBs.
Pete seems fairly blown away by Barkley's mental ability. That's the single most important thing for any QB in a system like USC's, which relies more on skill and precision and less on wildass athleticism from its QB.
Barkley's not a great runner, but then neither were any of USC's other QBs. He's supposed to have the biggest arm of the group, maybe even bigger than Palmer's.
I said it before, to Mgo: Barring injury, Barkley will end up being a #1 overall pick in the NFL draft.

They don't have to make plays, just dont turn the ball over and make the correct reads, either way both kids are from here in Orange County and will be better suited to playing QB at USC than John David Booty was

Making the correct reads and not turning the ball over are the single most difficult things for rookie QBs. Those are the things which will insure teams like LSU and Bama will not seriously challenge Florida in the SEC.
In USC's case they're saying Barkley is less of a danger to have those problems than anybody they've every had who was just starting off there.
USC is going to run the ball this year. They have their best O line ever in Pete's tenure there, and they retun all the TBs, plus Stanley Havili. They're just going to need their passing game to keep Ds honest and I'm sure Barkley or Corp will manage it.
The key is to simply survive Columbus, where the QB and the D will be so early in their learning curves. If they just survive that game and somehow eek out a W they'll be fine for the rest of the year.

Don't turn the ball over? Umm.......yeah, good luck with a true freshman on that one, I don't care how talented they are.
Make the correct reads? You don't learn that shit until your 3rd (occasionally 2nd) year in college. There's no reading defense's in HS. You drop back and throw to a wide open receiver. Kind of like when Jason White was at OU.

Well, you CAN turn the ball over 4, times, in the second hal,f as long as you have a booboo, knowing you make the personnel decisions, and lose to a huge underdog, while totally, dominating them, statistically.

The Bears are licking their chops....
The most talented team in Cal history... the best secondary in the country... and a freshman qb at slow cal U.
I may have to say Cal wins by at least 3 td's. I'm still sticking with Cal winning this game by 2 td's.
From what I hear.... Barkley is an interception machine and he's going up against a defensive backfield that had the second most interceptions in the country last year. That D backfield is a year older and has added some serious back-up talent.
This game won't end well for the Toejams.
m2 is the truth

Since you're really bad at quoting.... give me a better reason than "no".
With a D backfield full of hawks.... they just added "baby Mays" .... it's gonna get ugly.
feCal is now naming their players "baby-player still at USC"?

Trust me... it'll only be for the next 10 years.

Cal needs to figure out how to have the best secondary within five hundred miles before they can worry about having the best secondary in the country.
Someone needs to remind m2 that there's more to secondary play than garnering picks. There are also things like covering, tackling, providing run support, intimidating and getting drafted high by the NFL.
There are things like getting into the heads of the opposing teams' flashy but soft offensive stars, and taking them completely out of the game.
There's also that little thing about playing in big games, and showing up big in those big games...or even little games requiring plane rides to meh ACC teams.
Barring injuries there should be no way in hell it should happen, but how fucking funny would it be if Cal shits the bed again at Minnesota?

Sin,
Eric Berry - the DB getting Heisman Run
best DB in the NFL...wow so he plays for Raiders who get thrown on like 50 times a game since their defense is so shitty so this cat is going to get reps at knocking balls down...
