An open letter to the Wyoming Cowboys

Dear Sirs,
I realize that the last person you'd want to hear from right now is a lifelong Colorado Buffaloes fan, but I feel the need to reach out to you and offer my support for your game this weekend. You see, I have been a CU fan for as long as I've known what football is. I have seen a lot of ups and downs over nearly three decades of cheering on my team. I've seen them win a national championship and I've seen them lose at home to Montana St. I've seen them hang more points on Nebraska than anyone ever had before and I've seen them lose the most lopsided Big XII Championship Game in the conference's relatively brief history. Through it all, I've always tried to stay positive and root them on, no matter how dire things have looked.
Tomorrow afternoon, that all changes.
I never thought I'd say this, but what I need from you, the Wyoming Cowboys players and coaching staff, is to go into Boulder and beat the living hell out of my favorite team. Not just eke out a victory, mind you, but absolutely humiliate them. There can be no doubt that Dan Hawkins must be fired, and the sooner he is fired, the sooner CU can start the long, painful rebuilding process all over again.
A Buffs victory tomorrow could set the program back another two or three years. It could give the team just enough confidence to win a few more games throughout the remainder of the season and allow Hawkins to keep his job that much longer. This cannot happen. This MUST NOT HAPPEN. So please, Wyoming Cowboys, as you take the field tomorrow, try to remember that you're not just playing for yourselves, or even for your fans, family and friends. The future of a once-proud college football powerhouse is in your hands, and it must be completely destroyed before it can be rebuilt anew.
Thanks for your time and best of luck tomorrow. Go Pokes!
Best Regards,
Mike

I'm rooting for Colorado to win by 40 so Mike can be the first person to ever meltdown on these boards after his team just layed an ass raping on their opponent!
Go Buffs.......run the score up!!

my buddy left me a voicemail yesterday saying "mark my words, Colorado *will* upset Wyoming tomorrow".
i'd go (and to see those throwback unis) but it's the same time as OU-Tulsa. been a really ugly week in Boulder/Denver sports media. some bad mojo. while optimistic at first, i've been a critic of Hawkins (now called Coach Talkins around the CU boards) since the on-field clusterfuck that was Year 1 of the regime and some of the disturbing meglo-maniacal personality traits better kept in check when you are less than .500. it's downright malicious around here (for good reason).
Sadly for them, Buff nation is still in the "back to the past" mode. many want Eric Bienemy back as HC or OC (running backs coach is his most elevated coaching position thus far). or, dare to dream, Bill McCartney as AD or HC to restore the Black the Gold. I've seen this before with John Blake ("bring back Switzer", "bring back Billy Tubbs") and probably others like Mike Shula. Slocum or the eternal vindication of Jackie Sherrill on ATM boards. it's a bad road and fraught with delusion and false grandeurs. you can't go home again.

Mike, did you see that quote from Josh Smith in the Henderson Denver Post piece where he said that Hawkins was a good coach "as far as personality and motivation"? the "as far as" and what's not said there, says a lot imo.
Henderson has a hard-on for hating on CU, but that was a telling quote from J-Fly who has kept out of the media and taken the high road in all this.

There are some ND fans who want Lou Holtz to coach the team again. I have to say I'm with you on this point, although in the last week, the thought has occurred to me that ND ought to make Brian Polian its recruiting coordinator a la Vinny Cerrato back in the day, and bring in either Tim Brown or Rocket Ismail to coach special teams. A considerably more modest proposal, to be sure, but to be totally fair, it's in the same vein as the others.
A lot of ND fans wanted Hawkins when Weis was hired and in hindsight, I'm glad it didn't happen. Weis' stewardship at ND leaves much to be desired, but at least we're not quite the trainwreck, right now, that Colorado is.

that would be appropriate in some ways but that era is a sore spot with CU peeps. Boulder would burn to the ground. anger. there are some vestiges of that era around campus still today....in the student Rec Center. baby blue at mid-court on one of the basketball floors and in the swimming complex.

Hawkins had an out in his original contract about ND. he was the right hire at the time, based on available info. turns out he's either way smarter than everyone else and the CFB landscape hasn't figured him out yet or it was a bad hire the long run. He claims he's rebuilt the "culture" around CU football....and that's true in that they don't beat teams of equal talent (which Barney did as his calling card)...and i think the allegations about the dirtiness of the program with Barney were way overplayed (there were no criminal charges EVER filed in the rape allegations--no doubt there were a lot of "gray areas" regard consent IMO, but that doesn't make CU unique with black football players and white girls)....but, i can tell you things were getting sloppy on the academic end vis a vis coverups for academic misconduct. from personal experience.
Hawkins has done his part that way.

I think the story where Barney points out that there were four different presidents at CU during his tenure is even more telling. There's just no stability at CU.
And just for the record, as much as I want Hawk fired, I want Bohn fired just as badly. I'd love to see Mac come back as AD, but bringing him back as HC just smacks of desperation. Not really sold on Bienemy either. If they're going to promote someone from within, which would almost be a certainty if Hawk is fired mid-season, then my choice would be Cabral.
My ideal scenario after today's loss is that Bohn and Hawkins both get shitcanned, Mac is hired as the new AD, and Cabral is promoted as interim HC. Let him finish out the season and then decide if he's a good fit. If not, go after Shanahan as if the future of the program depends on it (because it does, after all).
Some other choices I wouldn't be terribly disappointed with are Gill and Fulmer. Hell, I wouldn't even mind if they lured Troy Calhoun away from AF and returned to the I-Bone option game.

see, i don't really buy that inconstant pres thing with Barney. he won the Big XII in year 3 and he got a big parachute love extension and they started too fast to build that upper deck and boxes on the East side of Folsom.
Bohn is great for PR. I wonder about the rest, based on results.
Shanahan? Gill has bigger fish to fry imo. this is not a good job right now.

Bienemy is NOT head coach material and never will be- he couldn't even hack it as RB coach. How many teams gave him a try & he failed at it? (It seems to me at least 3) And I think if Cabral had it in him, he'd have been a head coach somewhere by now. Shanny, in my opinion, would be another Fairbanks.
My choice would be Dave Logan to replace Hawkins

my point is that Bienemy as HC or even OC is stupid. even McCartney is dumb.
meanwhile, Toledo is scoreless against Ohio State. 31-0.

Shanahan is risky, just because, as Van pointed out in another thread, it's hard to imagine him kowtowing to a bunch of 17-year-old prima donnas on the recruiting trail. But I think if he surrounded himself with strong recruiters (like, for example, Hagan) he could be successful, and the potential upside would be huge, not just on the field, but in the stands. Shanny is the only guy who could actually win over some disgruntled Broncos fans, who have always been notoriously fickle in supporting the Buffs. I realize CU will never have the following that NU or OU has, but Shanahan would be a major draw.
Don't know a ton about Logan. He's the legendary HS coach turned radio guy, right? Does he have any collegiate coaching experience?

2nd. I flipped over once and won't be flipping back. The retro unis with the futuristic numbering is not a good match.

Dave Logan- all-america WR at Colorado in the early 70's, all pro WR for Cleveland for 8 or 9 yearsafter that- also drafted by MLB & NBA teams. When he retired from the NFL, came back to Colorado & coached HS football- won championships everywhere he's coached. Shanny wanted him to be one of his assistants with the Broncos. No college coaching experience, but he's no fucking Gerry Faust either. Not a big fan of him as radio voice of the Broncos, though

Logan was a great player and athlete. and has won big in Denver area HS football. however, would you support hiring a coach that no other team in your BCS conference would consider hiring?
because that's Dave Logan. he's not qualified, he's just a local hero with a radio show on the worst radio station in amercia. and same with Bienemy. he's never been a coordinator and was banned from the CU campus for a time.
nostalgia is a killer.

Logan might not even want the job, but putting him in the same category as Bienemy shows you just don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
And he didn't just win big in "Denver area HS football" he's won state championships at three different schools- took them from zeros to heros, and is always in contention. The school he's at now, Mullen, is a private school whch means he can openly recruit players- and players want to go there to play on his teams. Trying to dismiss him as "Joe Local Hero" just doesn't wash. The guy has a Professional Attitude in everything he does. Like I said before, Dave Logan is no Gerry Fucking Faust.
That said, nobody, and I mean fucking nobody knows if Logan is even interested in the job. He might be perfectly happy doing what he's doing now.

since i said he won in Denver area high school football, i'm curious how what you say refutes that. because he's not won anything more than that. or ever coached more than that. do YOU think any other Big XII team would consider hiring Dave Logan as HC?
and i put them (Logan and EB) in the same category because dumbass CU fans do, not because i do. moron.

what does this even mean? there was no existing connection between OU and Stoops...like there would be with Saint Logan and his awful radio show and CU. and Stoops was widely considered as the next "big thing" as an assistant to move to HC at a big-time program. you are just babbling across unconnected things here.

Sounds to me like there's something personal you have against Logan more than anything else.
I haven't read the CU fan boards in years- mostly because there weren't many actual fans, but loads of trolls who supported either the Corn, or Norman College- makes cul-de-suck readable by comparrison
or, you could be on campus every day like me.

Logan sounds like a dicey hire to me. College coaching is totally virgin territory for him and I think he'd struggle to attract out-of-state talent. Plus, as was previously noted, is he that interested? If he wants a job like CU why is he still in high school ball? Even a Texas high school legend like Briles had to take a assistant-job at TTech first. I would want a coach that has proven something at the college or pro level. If it was my call I'd take a run at Charlie Strong.

Being an assistant at the college level doesn't really prove anything- unless you fail at it, like Bienemy has repeatedly done. But you make a good point about whether Logan would want the job. A job as an assistant wouldn't even be a lateral move for him. Probably the same could be said for taking a head coaching position at a smaller college. Given his age- mid to late 50's, and his accomplishments as a pro, suggesting he "work his way up" is an insult in itself. It's the same as saying he doesn't know as much about football as some 25 year old grad student does. Hell, Hawkins has loads of experience as a college assistant, and even as a college head coach and he's taken a program at CU that was down and made it worse. Chuck Fairbanks had shitloads of experience too.
Logan really doesn't have to prove anything to anybody when it comes to football. I think the only way he'd consider taking the job would be if it were offered to him outright. And he might not be interested even then, for his own reasons. I sure don't envision him campaigning for it.

Shanahan is still my first choice, even though it's probably a long shot, since he'll likely get some offers from multiple NFL teams after this season is over (if not sooner). I just don't think you can overstate the importance of Shanahan's profile and his drawing power. Not many coaches can put asses in seats on name alone, but Shanahan could do it in Boulder. And even if he didn't lift a finger in recruiting and left it all to his assistants (which I find unlikely), I think his mere presence alone would be enough to land a few blue chippers. Playing for (and learning from) a two-time Super Bowl winning coach isn't something that too many other schools could offer.
Call it a pipe dream, but I think I've earned the right to dream after going through 3+ years of the Hawkins era...

The odds of Shanahan ever coaching college are slim to none. The odds of him coaching a program like Colorado are none. Why would he want to take over that situation? He's an established coach with 2 Super Bowl rings and a buttload of wins at the highest level. Why would he want to take on a rebuilding project in college? If he ever coaches in college it will be at a more established program where he can just freeload off of the previous coach's players.
By the way, sorry for your victory on Saturday!

the reason i asked Cuda about reading CU boards is that hiring Logan is kind of a running joke (because, over the years, his name always comes up on some of the lesser radio shows). I don't think anyone really takes him as a serious, "real world" candidate. he's a Colorado sports legend, former Buff and NFL success, and a great, if nomadic (mercenary?) HS coach in the Denver area but i don't think he's qualified to make the jump to HC in a BCS conference right now today. maybe spend a few years at OC, then i think he's viable if everything were to go swimmingly in the right situation at a successful program with a name coach. right now, that ain't CU.
as i said, his name is not going to turn up on anyone else's list around the conference (or even for the vacant CSU job when Lubick retired and same for AFA with DeBerry hung em up 2-3 years ago). so, to the suggestion i have something personal against Logan....it's not me that seems to have a rationality bending belief that he should be CU's HC when no one else in the area (with the possible exception of a couple AM radio codgers), at CU, or among CU alums fans or boosters i know think he should or could be.
and his radio show, like most everything on KOA, sucks.
now, if CU hangs on to Hawkins after this 3-4 win year, they could be in a situation where the program is so decimated they have few options.

Does anyone have a link to a quote directly from Shanahan saying he had any interest in Florida or ND? Usually when we hear about a coach having an interest in another job it's never a direct comment and seems to be just assumed by the media.

When coaching searches are run properly, there are no links. The coaches deny everything. But when Shannahan skips his weekly radio show to talk to ND, I'd say there was interest.

i think you are mixing up "having a masters degree and teaching a class or two" with "professor" or even faculty. non-tenured is about 80% of all university faculty in the US who don't have "tenure" vs. the 20% who do (mostly aging baby boomers who refuse to retire since their portfolio keep taking hits a la 9/11 or the recent economic bottoming)...not a basket term for teaching a class or two without a PhD or as a grad student. jus sayin'. me and your brother=apples, oranges.
to complete the thought: having a masters will rarely put you in front of a college class. if it does, you are an "instructor"....not a professor. there's a distinction.

Don't be dissin' Irv & Joe or you & I are gonna have some REAL problems. You got a Johnson? How about a Rod?
Time Out!
and his radio show, like most everything on KOA, sucks.
If it weren't for the Rockies' games, I'd never listen to KOA. Logan, as a play by play guy for the Broncos, just doesn't make the cut.
now, if CU hangs on to Hawkins after this 3-4 win year, they could be in a situation where the program is so decimated they have few options.
At this point, I'm just hoping they have no option but to cut season ticket prices.
