USC-Washington in game...

For the record, I'm picking USC to win ugly here. Huge hangover from the OSU game, this is Sarkisian's and Holt's Super Bowl, USC usually doesn't play well in Seattle, Barkley probably won't play, and it's supposed to rain.
To me, all that adds up to something like a USC 28-21 win.
Here we go...

Definitely doesn't seem to be any lingering bad blood between Sark and Pete, judging by their eager smiles and hugs at midfield before the game. Sark in particular seemed to be genuinely happy to greet Pete.
Now they're even interviewing them together on the field, which you never see before a game.
Nah, these guys are buddies. It's a non-story.
Everyone here is saying Locker represents a much greater threat than Pryor, even as a runner.

Yep, Corp is starting...
His first play as a starter for USC?
A screen pass, complete for a five yard loss.

Ah, fuck. Taylor Mays is in street clothes. The knee he got jacked up against Ohio St better not prove to be a lingering issue all season...
Joe McKnight's first carry, as the sun peeks through...nice nine yard effort between the tackles.
The field is absolutely soaked. They're splashing around like little kids.

Well, christ, that was easy. The USC O line simply escorted USC's backs down the field for an easy opening drive TD.
As easy as that drive looked I may get this Pick 'Em pick wrong too. Eeash.

So far they're not allowing Corp any more latitude to throw than they allowed Barkley. They've let him throw a few screens five yards behind the line of scrimmage, for two five yard losses.
Those plays are never going to work against an eight man box, with everyone sucked in towards the line.
They also let him throw a little bubble screen, plus one little seven yarder into double coverage which could've been picked.
So, they're again going to just rely on the line, the running game and the D to get it done. That may work here, but it won't work all year long. They're going to have to stretch the field eventually.

Jake Locker is the best QB in the Pac 10.
We've got a game here. 10-7 USC now, after Locker looked great marching them down for a huge TD.

Ah, shit. McKnight just got hurt again, rolling his ankle on the field turf. They've got him returning kickoffs??

Ah, fuck, again. 4th and 1 from the 35, Pete goes for it. Stafon Johnson makes it, only to fumble it away five yards later.
Yep, this is looking just like a typical lose or win ugly game.
No sign yet of McKnight returning, after rolling his ankle.

USC's offense has ground to a halt. Corp's missing, and they're not even trying to stretch the field.
It's beginning to look like the OSU game, with USC playing from horrible field position this whole quarter, while Washington keeps getting short fields.

Washington just received the gift of a horrible personal foul call on Everson Griffin, which was effectively a turnover. They would've had to punt otherwise. They converted that horrible call into a FG, so now it's 10-10, and they have all the momentum.
USC never looks good in these fucking rainy games in the U&L.
They're going to have to throw the ball at least a little - and not just six yard patterns - if they want to have any offense in this thing.
USC's kick return team is HORRIBLE!! They're getting a holding call every time this season, so they keep starting drives from their own ten yard line. Their play calling is down to nill from there.
Corp looks awful.
Three and out from their own 12, and again they're going to give Washington another short field.

What a shitty way to end the half. No time outs, so they can't stop the clock. Ausberry drops a pass which would've stopped the clock and left them well within FG position. Then Havili gets stopped behind the line, and the clock runs out before they can get their FG team in position...
Gah.
This USC offense is putting too much pressure on the USC defense. This will not keep working. All it takes is a turnover or two to screw it up, and that's what USC did: They committed the huge turnover. Then they backed it up with the bullshit roughing the passer penalty, which was effectively a second turnover.
They're going to have to do something through the air in the second half if they want to win this thing.

Nice three and out for the USC D to open the second half.
Joe McKnight is back in the game, so that's good.
Hey, what would a USC drive be this season without starting off with a holding penalty? Yep, there it is...followed by a procedure call.
Nice. Dig a hole guys. Need a shovel?

Another McKnight fumble...but USC recovered it.
USC just got a huge break, from one of the stupidest penalties ever...
McKnight jukes a guy out of his ass on 3rd and long, but during the run the Husky DC stepped a couple yards out onto the field near McKnight. The refs called a sideline interference penalty on the guy, giving USC an automatic 1st down.
Lame.
USC's holding penalties are killing them...
...and McKnight just got hurt again, this time when his own teammate rolled up his knee, just like what happened to Taylor Mays against OSU.
This is like being treated with leeches.

Holy fuck...
Havili fumbles away what was going to at least be a short FG opportunity.
USC just cannot get out of their own way. They are doing everything possible with these mistakes to let Washington hang around.
This is one of the sloppiest, ugliest games I've seen since, well, the Oregon-Boise St game two weeks ago!

Corp just threw it right to
two Washington defenders, inside the Washington 15, killing
another scoring drive with another turnover.
They keep taking huge chunks of time off the clock, only to end drives with turnovers deep in Washington territory. Pretty good way to make sure your team never scores.
This is truly painful to watch.

Meanwhile, Locker is making no mistakes, and Washington has no turnovers. This is beginning to feel like Locker will end up being the difference, thoroughly outplaying USC's QB.
USC needs their own turnover, and some sort of big play. Their D just held again, but Locker will eventually get something done if the USC offense hands him enough opportunities.

'Spray, read this thread. It'll tell you what's going on. USC's dominating the line of scrimmage but their mistakes are killing them, and they're keeping Washington in this thing with their inability to stretch the field, or finish drives without turning it over.

Locker's for real, but he's not the problem. Washington only has one good drive this game. The USC D is doing their job. It's the O which is a pile of mistakes.

Why the FUCK do you run to the short side...ever??
Run to the wide side, where the sideline isn't the 12th defender! Goddammit!!
My entire life I've watched USC do that, and I've never understood it. Let those lineman pull and get out in front, and extend the field. Don't run to where everything's bunched up, and the pursuit angle quickly defeats the play.
Fucking insane.

Switzer set up to the wide and ran the option to the short side for the home run all the time.

This looks just like the OSU game, only with many, many more mistakes. Now they have to score again late to win. They're down 13-10. Their offense has to do something to help out this defense.

Three and out, and Corp almost got picked again. Shitty punt, leaving Washington a short-ish field again.
Barkley's throwing on the sidelines, but it ain't gonna happen.
Washington simply isn't making any mistakes, and USC simply can't stop making mistakes. They're also not even attempting to threaten Washington deep, or on the outside.

it's a sore spot for me. Switzer ran the option to short all day. one seal block and he's got you. dumbfucks here in Colorado who thing by virtue of McCartney running some option from 86 to 91, they are the experts and know more than OU and NU fans combined. the clown who used to call the CU games on the local station would always say "you can't run the option the short side"....i'd piss blood. we ran the motherfucking bone on the playground in Norman. pulling guards and all.
Van, you guys need to get in this game or you gonna lose.

USC D gets another three and out.
USC is 0/9 on third down, and that, along with the turnovers and penalties, is the story of the game. Corp simply has done nothing.
Good punt return for USC, so maybe finally they can open the playbook a little.
McKnight breaks a huge one, looking awesome!!
And fucking fumbles again, at the end of the play!!
But USC trailed the play, and recovered it!
FUCK YOU, MCKNIGHT, YOU GREASY FINGERED MOTHERFUCKER!!
USC is in the red zone, trying to punch it in.
Uhhh, make that 0/10.
They can't even attempt to throw with Corp, so they have to settle for a tying FG. Goddammit. In the red zone everything bunches up. They have to be able to try more than predictable running plays.
This offense is soul destroying.
Washington gets the ball back with four plus minutes to go, in a tie game.
I'm liking Washington to win this, unless USC can get a turnover, and they don't have a single one yet.

Big twelve yard sack on 1st down. The USC D deserves a medal, then they deserve to get to assfuck the GF's of each of the USC offensive players.

Washington has 3rd and 15 from deep in their own territory...
Locker converts a huge one, nearly to midfield. Biggest play of the game right there. They were about to have to punt from deep in their own end, giving USC a short field with three plus minutes to go.
Now USC is looking to simply take it to O.T., by not giving up another twenty yards.

Locker runs for it on 3rd and short. They're maybe five to ten yards out of FG range.
Locker is getting it done.
False start penalty...pushes them a little farther out of FG range.

This one has all the hallmarks of being the game USC seems to have most years, where they lose to someone they shouldn't. USC typically never plays well in Seattle, and coming off the draining OSU game, yeah, I can see USC laying an egg here.
Hey, at least I got the Pick 'Em pick right.
