Here's my analysis of the game. This game will only be an upset if Penn State wins. You're laughing, I know. But it's true. Iowa is a much more complete foosball team and there is no doubt in my mind that State Penn will not win this game UNLESS they are at least plus-2 in the turnover battle. The rankings are a god damn joke. We start 21, go 3-0 and are now 32? Fucking bullshit. I said after the UNI game it was not a big deal. I said iowa was fine. I was right. We have gotten better each week despite having a ton of key injuries. Penn State has not been tested. Their 3 opponents are a joke. We have absolutely no glaring weaknesses outside of Stanzi's slow starts. So PSU's only hope will be for Stanzi to give them some free points early and hope to hold on like they couldn't do last year. Iowa has one of the best secondaries in the nation and PSU has inexperienced WR's so I think they're going to need Royster at his best. If I were their OC I would play it very conservative and mix in a trick play every now and again to keep our defense off balance. Watch ISU and Arizona film and you'll notice that opening it up and trying to throw all over us is a recipe for disaster. If you do that you have to be incredibly effiecient, patient, and can't make any mistakes. But is that possible with such an inexperienced receiving corps? I doubt it. I'm telling you, if JoePa tries to open it up you're not gonna win. Play it conservative, hope Stanzi makes his usual first half mistakes and then try and be on the positive end of the close game this year. I know PSU is the highly ranked team and the 10 point favorite but that's a load of crap. The one edge PSU has is it's a home game and we don't really know how Iowa will handle entering into that environment. That Jizzout you've got going is pretty intimidating. So I'm hopeful Ricky will get settled in early. I do wish this game was played later for a couple reason- I think it could be for a Big-10 title and I don't think later in the year PSU would stand much of a chance. But I'm going with my gut feeling in that Ricky will not get off to a sluggish start, Clark will struggle to consistently find receivers, and Iowa will take this one by double digits. 27-14. But if Stanzi does make some mistakes, PSU could win.

Fuck off, I post most of the time from my BlackBerry. I'm not gonna take the time to put that shit in paragraph form. If it's in paragraph form you can safely assume I posted it from a computer.
Anyways, back on topic........
PSUFAN, what's your take on the game? I expect a well thought out breakdown and prediction.

Ferentz has had Paterno's number. Joe has been flatly outcoached in most of their matchups.
PSU has three all-american candidates on defense...Jared Odrick, Sean Lee, and Navarro Bowman. Right now, only Odrick is 100%. Lee is nursing a sprained knee, and probably won't go. Bowman "has a groin"

. I think Bowman will see some snaps. Odrick is one of the best DTs in the land - key on him during this game. He will demand a double team, which frees Ogbu and Crawford and Hayes for some damage. The DL is the strength of the D - if Iowa can get the pass off, though, the secondary is green in that SHIT zone defense Tom Bradley loves so damn much.
As usual, I think we'll go as far as our offense can take us. Clark has been a bit rusty in the three cupcake smashings we've patiently sat through. Of course, Mike Robinson looked a little erratic in 2005, and then turned it up hugely for the conference season. Our offensive line has been working through some kinks, but they've got the rotation set and I think they'll settle in. PSU has the needed talent in Clark, Royster, and Moye.
I'm feeling chipper here. This will be another showcase of the White House under the Prime Time lights. Steal the lube from Mace, JON - don't get caught dry, because penetration is coming dutifully. :brad: :brad: :brad: :brad: :brad:

I like all the picks of PSU hammering Iowa. It makes me laugh. It will make victory on Saturday even more enjoyable. I can't remember the last time we played PSU and weren't predicted to get killed. I said it before- the ONLY way State Penn can beat Iowa is if they are plus-2 in the turnover margin. If they are not, they can't win. That statement won't seem funny to those of you haters come Saturday. Go Hawks!

Yeah, JON, the team that committs turnovers often loses the game. Are you trying to set yourself up for some sort of free pass if Iowa can't protect the ball?
Re: Schmawkeyes...sig/avatar bet?

by TheJON
No my point is PSU can't beat is straight up. They will need the breaks. If both teams protect the ball, Iowa wins. Iowa also wins at minus-1 in the TO margin. its a CFB game, so of course anything can happen. So I'm not saying PSU can't win. But they aren't winning without the breaks. I guarantee it. Not setting myself up for an out, just telling it how I see it.

Yeah, Jsc I know man it's absolutely insane for an Iowa fan to predict a win over Penn State. I mean, they just own us and sure kicked our ass last year. Yes, I'm not only picking a win but I'm confident in my pick because we are a better team. You won't be "loling" come Saturday night. I like all picks of PSU routing yet no analysis of why.

That thread is hilarious! Best offseason thread of 2009!
Let's see..........Van claimed Michigan State was so much better than Iowa. And I got ripped for saying they were not. The part where he claimed they have a better program was the best part of the entire thread. Iowa = 3-0. Michigan State = 1-2. Teams have played about even schedules so far with a SLIGHT edge to MSU. I said MSU is going to lose some tough games because of inexperience at QB. Well, I'll be damned..........Cousins made a couple bad throws in clutch spots. No fucking way!!
Michigan State 2009 reminds me of Iowa in 2008. They had no experience at the QB position and have already lost 2 close games down the stretch. Granted, the CMU game didn't seem to have a lot of blame to be put on the QB from what I heard. But Iowa had a similar run last year. We started 5-4 and had we been more experienced at QB, it would have been 9-0. 12 points COMBINED in those 4 losses all due to Stanzi mistakes. I could see Michigan State losing to Wisconsin on Saturday and dropping to 1-3 and then before you know it.........they'll finish out 8-4 or 7-5. Much like Iowa did last year. Ricky started making plays late in games towards the end of the year and, coincidentally, Iowa started kicking ass and taking names. Same could happen for Sparty this year.

It sure is amazing 'round these parts what home game wins over Northern Iowa, Iowa St, Arizona, Florida Int, North Texas, etc, do for homer fans.

Shit, if 1-3 turns into 8-4 I'll be tickled pink. It's been a rough start, no doubt. Still, there's a lot of optimism since Big Ten play starts on Saturday in which MSU starts 1-0 and Iowa 0-1.

MSU could win Saturday. I would not be surprised. Don't you play Michigan next week? That's a trap game on Saturday. Right between Notre Dame and Michigan. Despite that, I'm almost tempted to take Michigan State in my Pick 6 at +2.5. I've got 5 games and just can't decide on a 6th.
Hey, Killian............. Notre Dame -7.5. Yes or no?? I think it's down to either ND at -7.5 or MSU +2.5.

The discussion was Iowa vs MSU and we know where you stood on this debate. Now your response is "wow you beat a bunch of nobody's?" Come on now......
By the way.........
Even a beatdown of a middle of the pack Pac-10 team is not good enough for a guy that claims the Pac-10 is great????

JON,
Look at my picks!

Honestly, I'd pass on ND. Defense is highly suspect and Clausen is dinged up and Allen is a game time decision. Stay far away.

I decided on ISU -9.5 but I could end up changing my mind.
I got Iowa +10.5, ISU -9.5, Illinois +14.5, USF +14.5, Miami -2.5, and I took Cal whatever the spread was (6.5??).
Sitting at 12-6 through 3 weeks right now. 1 game behind my pace last year. Was in 2nd place last year through 3 weeks. Ended up about 50th!

Point taken, but Iowa's three wins are better than a loss to Washington, imo.
They're not better than a win in The Shoe though. See, USC's already played two roadies, and they haven't squeeked out any wins at home against any D1-AA teams.
Iowa likely loses that game in Seattle too, but they'd have to actually go on the road OOC sometime to find out.

Wasn't Jon claiming that Iowa was so dinged up an 80 year old woman from Des Moines was now a 3rd string CB and returning kicks? Just a couple weeks ago? Bitch must of stepped up her game and went all Neon Deon as she assumed the starting spot on the left side.

She did step her game up. Next man in.........I don't know why I ever doubted. Secondary has been lights out. Were down to the #5 CB against ISU..........no big deal though! That old lady (William Lowe) played outstanding. Didn't even know who the fuck he was until after the game. I called my brother and go "who the fuck was that #10? He was phenomenal!"

jon's right, iowa would lay an ass beating on udub. the only criteria you have to say differently is that it must be difficult to win there if sc couldn't.
it's too bad yours is the only coach in the world who would lose to udub with that personnel. carrol's going to end up a hall of fame coach simply because he could recruit, not because he can actually coach. the only time he opens it up is if his roster averages 6.2 stars, otherwise he's afraid they'll fuck up and ends up calling plays from the fetal position.

Iowa isn't as good as either LSU or USC, and Washington beat one of them while giving the other all they could handle.
No, Iowa isn't flying all the way to Seattle and beating this year's Washington team. They might beat 'em in Iowa City, but not in Seattle.

So, you've already forgotten the LSU-Washington game, and as we all know Iowa's just as good as either LSU or USC.
Alrighty then.
it's too bad yours is the only coach in the world who would lose to udub with that personnel. carrol's going to end up a hall of fame coach simply because he could recruit, not because he can actually coach.
Yep, he's gone 84-10 because he can't coach. He's succeeded at a recruiting hotbed like USC where others who enjoyed that same recruiting hotbed failed...because he can't coach. He wins all those big games and beats the fuck out of your conference's 5 star loaded teams because he can't coach.
You're a fucking idiot.
the only time he opens it up is if his roster averages 6.2 stars, otherwise he's afraid they'll fuck up and ends up calling plays from the fetal position.
All three of his current QBs are 5 stars, and Sanchez was a 5 star when they wouldn't let him try anything against Oregon in '07. It has nothing to do with their star ranking, it has to do with their lack of experience. Pete plays it overly safe when his QB is inexperienced.
