I know that Ole Miss was the chic pick of the year, but #4? C'mon now. They're still getting mileage out of beating the Gators last year. Maybe they can meet UM in the CapOne bowl.
Upset or exposure?

Upset or exposure?
I think a little of both. They're still a good team but Top 5 is a bit high for them. Maybe 20 or so. I don't think South Carolina is fundamentally sound enough to consistently beat teams like that, however. That game should have been over by halftime, but the Cocks were only up 6-3 due to pathetic red zone play.

The offensive execution of this game, or lack thereof, was hard to watch.
Definitely exposed.
How in the world were they #4? Based on what?? They were a four loss team last year, and they lost their two best players this year, and they hadn't even played anybody. How is that #4??

Psssst.....
I've been telling you ole miss... didn't belong in the top 50
But, what do I know...
Cal is now at # 5 and licking their chops....

Van in another thread trying to prove Iowa isn't any good.......
Iowa's not even ranked. Somehow I don't think it's only ESPN who feel that USC and LSU are both significantly better than an Iowa team who should've lost at home to a lame D1-AA team.
Van now disputing where these same voters ranked Ole Miss
How in the world were they #4? Based on what??
Nice!

Yep, Ole Miss should've been right there with Iowa: unranked.
Haven't done anything...aren't coming off a world-beater of a season...lost their best player(s)...no pedigree whatsoever as a program...haven't played anybody at all this year...
...shouldn't be ranked.
Instead, they're ranked #4, which means S. Carolina - an SEC team who's looked awful so far, and who looked awful again tonight - just supposedly earned a win over the #4 team in the nation.
Ole Miss is Exhibit 1-100 why the SEC keeps getting every break in the world from the pollsters. If Ole Miss were in the Big 10 they'd be Iowa...unranked.

Thursday night home dog strikes again.
Oh, and I agree with most of the thoughts in this thread, but I'd give South Carolina's D a little credit here. It was stifling. Snead never had an open guy to get the ball to, even when he could get it off.

Except that before last night we've seen untested, highly ranked teams from the SEC beat the Ol' Ball Coach's Cocks every single time... and it happens all the time, because every year the SEC has untested, highly ranked teams. That would be why S. Carolina hadn't won a game against a highly ranked team since '91, or whatever that stat was they flashed. 0-22, or something like that.
Ole Miss is Oregon St or Iowa, minus any BCS bowl games wins or really good seasons.
Ole Miss, Iowa and Oregon St had essentially the same seasons last year, with identical records, a bowl game win and a huge upset win during the regular season sandwiched around some truly horrific losses.
Two differences: 1. Oregon St returned their best players. 2. Neither Iowa nor Oregon St are in the SEC.
Ole Miss gets a high ranking, Oregon St and Iowa don't. That's how the SEC gets things done: Pre-season rankings based on nothing, followed by self-fullfilling polls throughout the season where the SEC sees one undeserving, highly ranked team after another replace one another in the rankings throughout the season. The articificial SOS rankings the SEC receives are just off the charts, precisely because of games like last night's.
Last night's game should've carried no more significance than games featuring Oregon St traveling to Arizona St, or Iowa traveling to Illinois.

but Jon said Nutt was a "great" coach, repetedly. personally, i think Nutt is a poor man's Gary Barnett. he's good at winning 6-7 games a year with 5-6 win talent most years with an occasional 8-9 win year matched by a 3-4 win campaign. at least Barney won 2 different BCS conferences.....I doubt Nutt ever wins his division of the SEC.

...which was clearly evident in the Georgia game, where they made a Georgia team who couldn't do anything against defensless Okie St suddenly look like the '07 Patriots.

that's a good point in the positive use of transitive comparisons. though, Pokey State has a chance to get a bunch better on D if Bill Young hangs around. he's a real coach. the kind Leach should have paid for years ago if he wanted to make the next step. but since all he has to do to keep his job is keep beating ATM, a couple of the Amarillo high schools OOC, and every once in a while take down OU or UT at home....i guess the imperative (and Pickens checkbook) wasn't there.

South Carolina's d has been strong for a number of years now. I think that's pretty evident to anybody who's been paying even the slightest bit of attention.

Mgo, you're basing this on what?
I'll you what you're basing it on: Their performances against the SEC, where the offenses just aren't that strong.
Bottom line, no good D gets torched the way their's did against Georgia. When a good D has a bad game they give up twenty something points to a good offense. They don't completely lie down and take it from a meh offense, to the tune of 41 points.
That same stellar D gave up 56 to Florida, 31 to meh Clemson and 31 to Iowa.
Yeah, S. Carolina has a good D...when they're playing N.C. State, Tennessee or Ole Miss.

That was a case of a decent D having a good game.
That same Florida team put up 56 on S. Carolina. That ain't a good D. That's a good D only against select teams.

Joe Kines had some great D's in the meat grinder. they want to fire him at ATM. he's getting lit up.

I'll never prop a coach who throws his players under the bus like Scuba Steve does. He can drown in a pool of Cindergash discharge for all I care.

I'm basing it on what I've seen. They play fast, smart, disciplined, they hurry the qb, they stop the run, and Norwood is a stud linebacker. South Carolina's biggest issue is their offense, not their defense (which is the pretty much the sole reason they got to a January bowl last year). Do you not think any of their deficiencies have anything to do with their anemic offense constantly going 3-and-out and routinely keeping a gassed D on the field, which almost always gives opposing offenses a short field to work with?
Yeah, S. Carolina has a good D...when they're playing N.C. State, Tennessee or Ole Miss.
You can't lump Ole Miss in with those two. They've proven they can score a lot of points, unlike the other two teams you mentioned.

That's the wonderful thing about Spurrier: Despite his utter lack of attention to defense his offense absolutely blows goats, and always has, ever since he left Florida. It sucked with the Redskins, and it sucks even worse since he's been a Cock.
Speaking of which, how does S. Carolina manage to continue to get away with using a fighting bird from an illegal sport as its mascot? What, did someone finally put their foot down to the idea of naming themselves the South Carolina Dragging Darkies Behind A Pick Up Truck?

I guess 'Shine Runners must've also already been taken, huh?
Seriously. S. Carolina going with Gamecocks would be like a D.C. team going with Tax Evaders or a Seattle team going with Spotted Owl Killers.
People, you're not supposed to be
proud of your disgusting practice of torturing animals. If you really wanna celebrate your state's 'fighting spirit', fine, go with something like At Least We're Not Frenchies, or The Pissed Off Waffle House Waitresses.
Fuck, why not just slap Michael Vick's mug on your helmet.

it's only been illegal in Oklahoma for maybe 10 years. when i was kid, my g-parents house was about 4 blocks from a "rooster farm" in Perry, OK. you always head them in the morning. and drove by there on the way to the very respectable for a small town Perry Golf and Country Club course. pretty solid layout in good condition most of the year for small-town, OK. greens were kind of small, rough. but, you had to hit some real golf shots to score well.

Has it even been that long? I seem to remember it only being a few years ago.
originally, i put 5-6 years...but, i can't be sure anymore as infrequently as i read the daily OK.
mostly i posited the extra 4-5 years to deflect Oklahoma's rep as a hillbilly state. don't get me wrong, i love my peeps....some of the defenses for the sport/art were a bit hilarious. plus, everyone knows that kind of thing is way more fun when it's illegal.

Plays to the level of his competition. Always. Expect him to get rolled, and his teams will bite you. And vice versa.
'09 Ole Miss = '08 Georgia
I expected '09 Arkansas to be '08 Ole Miss but those guys need to find some defense. Give it a year.
