Iowa has 9,200 farms with hogs and 5.47 hogs for every person in the state (16.1 million hogs).
Iowa farmers earned $6.56 billion in 2003 from the sale of crops, including $3.71 billion from corn and $2.60 billion from soybeans. Livestock sales accounted for $6.07 billion in Iowa.
Thirty-two thousand Iowa farms have cattle; 47 percent have less than 50 head, 20 percent have 50-99 head, 30 percent have 100-499 head, 2 percent have 500-999 head, and 1 percent have more than 1,000 head.
Corn was planted on 12.7 million acres in Iowa in 2004 with 12.4 million acres harvested for grain. Iowa farmers harvested 2.24 billion bushels of corn with a yield of 181 bushels per acre. Iowa produced 19 percent of the nation's corn for grain.
Iowa farmers planted 10.2 million acres of soybeans, and 10.15 million acres were harvested for beans in 2004. Iowa farmers harvested 497 million bushels of soybeans with an average yield of 49 bushels per acre or 16 percent of the nation's soybeans.
