Was reading a copy of the USC media update that is handed out to working press on game days. Right inside the packet is a note asking media to not refer to USC as "southern cal".

Uhhh, what the hell? Isn't the name of the school Univ of Southern California? You don't want us to refer to you as Southern Cal, Southern California, etc? No freaking way am I calling you the Men of Troy or Trojans. You have been and will continue to be Southern Cal. Hell, most of your students and alumni refer to the area as socal.

The only reason I can think they wouldn't want to be Southern Cal has to do with Cal.

Seriously Lefty, why all that noise before this? Obviously they wanted to distance $C from Kal. Stupid but understandable. Though, I'm sure we'll get the the unofficial "offical" reason for this soon.

On a slightly different note, I've always been led to believe that around the country USC has long been referred to as "Southern Cal," and I've even seen them listed that way throughout much of the national media.

Watching USC-ND games as a kid, Keith Jackson often referred to them that way, and I still see them listed that way on betting touts and the occasional score ticker.

As a fan though of USC, and growing up in California, I've never known of a single person who ever referred to USC that way.

Is it still true, that the rest of you around the country refer to them as "Southern Cal," rather than "USC?"

Mike Garrett hates it. That's about the extent of it.

Southern California, USC, SC, Southern Cal, SCCC. They're all used in the region that lies between Point Concepcion to the Mexican border.

BTW, drop 'southern california' into Google Maps and you'll see another reason they prefer USC

i remember when that became an "issue" but i never really understood what the big deal was.

I've heard that most of their fans don't like it either, which is why many of the posters on ND homerboards insist on referring to them that way.

Many ND fans jokingly brought up Southern Cal in response to Davie's now-infamous comment about ND needing "more directional schools on the schedule." Of course, that was back in the day when the 11-game winning streak wasn't quite such a distant memory.

Well in fact Van, since U$C is in the Pacific 10 and on the West coast maybe they should be called the University of Southern Western Pacific California University.

Why not call a spade a spade? They're the University Of Northern Mexico.

If you really wanna get all weathervane-y about it, how about the University Of South Central L.A., or even Ghetto Tech?
