Probably the least anticipated matchup of these two teams ever...I can't say that I, a Big 10 slappy, see anything compelling about this game. Neither team is very good - PSU is ranked way too high. OSU cannot seem to figure out what to do with Pryor. Blech!

Are you high on crack? Please tell me you are. Holy fuck, even Van thinks that's a weak take.
Yeah, Penn State is terrible. They allow like 7 points a game and have some good young playmakers on offense an a solid, experienced QB. Ohio State also has one of the best defenses in the country.
Least anticipated matchup between these 2 teams ever? Have you even paid attention to State Penn since they joined the Big-10? This is one of their better teams since the first year.
Great analysis.

You mean the 93 team that went 4-4? And not including the recent Orange Bowl team? Great take, shit-sandwich.
2nd year........my bad.
And this IS one of their better teams. I did not say BEST team. 3rd or 4th best PSU team since joining the league 16 years ago.
Thanks for playing.

Yes, the same Iowa team that nearly lost to: Northern Iowa; Arkansas State; Michigan; and Michigan State.
So what's your take on the 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes? Just curious.

Let's just put these 2002 OSU-2009 Iowa comparisons to bed, once and for all...
2002 OSU
Week 1: 45-21 over Taco Tech. A blow out, over a BCS conference opponent.
Week 2: 51-17 over Kent St. A blow out, over a team they were supposed to kill.
Week 3: 25-7 over Washington St. A blow out, over the eventual Pac 10 champion.
Week 4: 23-19 over Cincy on the road, not in The Shoe. Their first close game.
Week 5: 45-17 over Indiana. A blow out. OSU has already had three more blow outs than Iowa's had this entire season so far. No games against any D1-AA teams or Arky St. No close games against them either.
Week 6: 27-16 over Northwestern. Eleven point win on the road.
Week 7: 50-7 over San Jose St. Another blow out. OSU is killing the teams they're supposed to. Killing them. Destroying them.
Week 8: 19-14 over Wisky, at Camp Randall. A close one, on the road.
Week 9: 13-7 over Penn St. Close one, but their MOV was only four points less than Iowa's.
Week 10: 34-3 over Minny. Another blow out.
Week 11: 10-6 over Purdue, on the road. Again, on the road.
Week 12: 14-9 over Michigan, in their rivalry game.
Besides their rivalry game, their only close game at home was to Penn St. They had six legitimate blowouts plus another double digit win. They didn't scabdick against any non BCS conference teams. They dominated most of the time.
In no way, shape or form does their mostly dominant 2002 season compare to Iowa's season of near constant scabdicking.

Sig/Av bet accepted.
I always enjoy this matchup. While neither team is in the running for a MNC this year, I guess some of the national lustre is off...but personally, this will always be a big game. Apart from a thumping in '94 and several thumpings that went the other way, the series usually produces a very competitive game. The teams broke the mold by winning in each others' houses the past two years.
I think this will be another tight game - but I think PSU's D matches up well against tOSU's offense. Both QBs are mistake-prone, but capable of big plays.
PSU: 17
tOSU: 13

Umm......where is the Illinois game. Illini were like 3-9 and they needed OT to beat them.
7 of their 14 games went down to the final possession.
They needed a 40 yard 4th down pass to beat a Purdue team that had already quit on the season- much like most Joe Tiller's teams after about week 5.
They did have some blowouts, but this was a team that played with fire even more than Iowa because, unlike tOSU in 2002, Iowa's games (except for 2) weren't coming down to a final drive/play.
Sure, they had some blowouts too (whereas Iowa doesn't have many), but they also had some scabdick wins against mediocre teams.
While I would agree Iowa could have a lesser record than they do, I think tOSU was in greater jeopardy of losing a lot more games than Iowa down the stretch. Credit the Buckeyes for making plays, but they had a similar team to Iowa. Great defense and special teams.......offense made plays when they had to. Didn't beat themselves. They knew how difficult it is to play a perfect game, so they sat around and waited for the other team to make mistakes- and then they made them pay for those mistakes. This is what Iowa is doing this year. You make one little mistake against the Hawkeyes, they'll burn you. People say Iowa needs to play a perfect game to win. That's not true. We don't play perfect games- ever.......yet we're still 9-0. The truth is we force the other team to play a perfect game, and if they don't they'll lose. This is great strategy. Much like the Buckeyes in 2002, Iowa is a well coached, physical, and fundamentally sound football team. It might not look pretty, but style points are only for highlight reels. Nobody ever won a championship because they made a lot of highlight reel plays.

Hate to be pessimistic about my own team, but I have a feeling The Vest is going to run his typical conservative/horseshit offensive gameplan on Saturday and it will inevitably cost tOSU the game. Yep, I will know after the first drive whether Jim brings a set of balls with him to Happy Valley or not. But I predict right now that he won't. He'll call some very basic, non-creative up-the-middle running plays that will go for no gain, thus putting Pryor in 3rd and long situations all day that will cause multiple sacks and some possible turnovers. The tOSU defense will be called upon to win the game (again), and they will rise to the occasion, but it will be the deficiency of the offense (and namely the offensive gameplan) that will ultimately lose the game for tOSU.
On the bright side, Tressel will be without the luxury of a reliable kicker-- Aaron Pettrey hurt his leg on kickoff coverage last week. This might force his hand to be a little bit more aggressive in the red zone. But I'm not getting my hopes up.
PSU 19
OSU 7

This is still a compelling matchup, imo. PSU is a top 10 team playing for a BCS bowl, and Ohio St controls its own destiny in the Big Ten. There's a lot at stake. The way some people are talking you'd think these are two sub .500 teams.
Penn St 21
Ohio St 13

Like I said, there's no compelling reason for me to watch this game. And, yes, I am a Big 10 homer. I think my first post on SCII was arguing with the board's CFB know-everything about Michigan's national championships versus Nebraskas and Big Ten versus Big 12.
Sure, a PSU win moves them into position for a BCS game...which means it moves them closer to getting their asses handed to them just as every other Big Ten has in the past few years. The Big Ten is, what, under .500 by a couple games in the BCS despite sending the most teams. Penn State will be just another victim should they make it in. Worse, they'll probably get beat by a Cinci, Boise, or TCU.
And as I noted before, OSU will continue to misuse Pryor, who has the potential to be the most exciting player in the Big Ten, and that removes whatever remaining interest in the game for me.
The only game that really matters in the Big Ten is the Iowa-OSU matchup...and then only if OSU wins against Penn State. A win against a three-loss OSU will be about as interesting as the rest of Boise's schedule.

Fine, go wank off to pics of Dick Cheney this weekend. I'm sure many of us can find some enjoyment in watching a game with these two unis on the field.

Don't live in Troy. Life ain't close to perfect. And, again, not sure why expressing an opinion about the lack of a compelling reason to pay attention to OSU-PSU amounts to a complaint of any sort.
Again, why are you maxed out about little 'ole me posting about my non-interest in this game and responding to replies to that expression of non-interest?

A complaint? No. A complaint would have been whining that the OP infected the board with a POS thread about this matchup. A complaint would have resembled your posts replying to my comments. I merely noted that my interest in this game is not very strong.
Why are you so terribly upset by this expression of disinterest, fanboy?

JMak: Ummm, no,

Referring to someone as such ain't a complaint. It's an observation.
Seriously, what are you amp'd about in this? I could see if you were 88 or PSU that you could be miffed about my comment, but what dog do you have in this besides trying to give me a rimjob?

If you consider typing out a 3-sentence paragraph to be "trouble," well, you may have a point.
You really didn't need to lift my balls off of fanboys nose. My taint was appreciating the attention.

Why do I need to be amped up? I'm smacking you on a smack board, jackass. Is this concept still foreign to you after all these years? Why don't you wrap your mouth around a piece of spanish moss and pretend you're tonguing G Dub's taint, while the rest of us discuss cfb.

You're not smacking. You're complaining about someone else complaining. It's the equivalent of going to the playground, running around the ball court, and then telling your wife you were balling when in reality you were getting run off the court.
And the reference to tonguing Dubya's taint after I already commented that I appreciate the attention you're paying to mine seems a little, well, weak.

Mace wrote:This game holds particular interest to me and Iowa fans this year but it is one that I would watch any season, just because it's OSU-PSU....same with OSU-Michigan. I think Penn State wins this game, probably a low scoring defensive battle, but the Lion defense will be too much for an inept Pryor to handle. I'm not sure who I should be cheering for, probably PSU, since an OSU loss will pretty much eliminate them from the Big 10 title race. If Iowa can beat NW tomorrow and find a way to win in Columbus next weekend, the winner of the PSU-OSU game won't matter.
Actually, I think the winner of PSU and OSU does matter to Iowa and in a big way. An Iowa win over a 2-loss OSU will lay well with the BCS polling. A OSU win restores some luster to the Buckeye brand. A win over a 3-loss OSU team that is pushing #20 in the polls ain't very impressive considering OSU's loss to Purdue. Meanwhile, a PSU win over OSU doesn't help them much in the BCS polls, imo. They stay where they are in the top 10. And with the bullshit that teams don't jump teams ahead of them if both win that means PSU doesn't get very far, hence, doesn't help Iowa much.
