I'm guessing a shoot out from a 300,000 ton tanker carrying flammable product isn't the most brilliant idea there, pikkkle. Perhaps they could keep you on board so that you could lure them with promises of Friday Night escapades.

I suspect that crude oil is probably not too flammable. I haven't handled the stuff, but refined oils are very difficult to ignite. Take a Bic lighter out sometime and try to ignite a few drops of motor oil. It will take longer than you think before it will ignite (the temperature of the oil needs to increase first). I've seen guys extinguish cigarettes in motor oil before.

I don't know anything about the science of crude oil, but if they aren't concerned about that, then why wouldn't they carry any armed guards on a ship carrying $20 million worth of oil?

And I'm guessing an assault rifle is probably a slightly more effective igniter than a Bic lighter.

Don't forget that as 88 said the temp must be raised in order to ignite. Raw product at the surface is very warm do the pressure and temp at depth. Often times the product is sent thru cooling racks (think radiator) before being put into a holding tank or sent down the pipeline.

Also as 88 has said I have seen ruffnecks put out cigs in pools of the raw petroleum on the derrick floor. OSHA and company safety engineers might not like it, but it happens.

The temp of the Indian Ocean dicates the temp of the oil in the tanks. Considering average temp is +/-80F, chance of ignition by any means other than intential or crazy perfect storm of circumstances, is fucking zero. If you have any doubt, see: Hundreds of cigarettes that I personally have put out in highly-refined US Navy 2190TEP high-pressure turbine oil without so much as a wisp of flame.

Truth is, the real danger is that the pirate boats are too small to show up on radar. This requires all vessels to post a 24-hour watch while transiting the Indian Ocean near Africa. Unless you're relieving the watch at least every 2 hours (which is impossible), there's no fucking way you'll ever see the pirates before they're already boarding your ship.

even these small boats should show up on surface radar. They won't show up at 30 miles, but so what. If you pick them up at 3 miles, it gives you the time to light them up with some 50 cal action.

What we really need to do is actually fukking take control of the seas in this area with the bazillions of dollars worth of hardware we have that is designed to do so. Establish 20 mile wide sea lanes in the area. Inform the world that if you don't belong in that lane you will be blowed the fukk out of the water. No exceptions. If this violates some sort of international sea charter.......too fukking bad.

I am fairly sure that anything in the pirate arsenal, including rpgs wouldn't do shit to a tanker. It is filled with crude, not refined gasoline. The shit really is pretty damn hesitant about burning. Once you get it lit off, it will burn with a vengeance, but, that requires quite a bit of heat for an extended period.

Maybe now that oil tankers are being targeted, they'll actually decide that it is worth the cost to shut these pests down.
