Hey, I'm loving the rain and so is my yard, especially the native plants. This is what signals them to come out of their summer dormancy.

The folks in the recent burn areas north of LA are prolly shitting their pants about now though.

Expecting a foot of snow today (central Cal).

We usually get a blast of cold air as we transition to winter, with very dry air, and strong east winds. This would be an exceptionally nasty example of this phenomenon. Currently 21 degrees, with 40+MPH winds.

I want my 36 and light rain back, which will come soon enough... and stay for a couple of months.

I guess on the positive side -- if the winds die down for a day, it will be winter golf weather. No plugging balls in the fairway when it's been converted to tundra, and we won't have to take the customary U&L winter full-swing putting stroke to get across the green...

so we got that going for us.


It's also a good reminder to not bitch too much when the Blanket-Of-Doom covers western Cascadia -- since we're seeing the alternative. Seems like every year, the utopian few months of the year make me forget how miserable winter is here (although that's certainly not unique to this locale).

For the life of me, I will never understand anyone wishing 36 and drizzle on anyone, much less themselves.

21 certainly is chilly, but, it's just an extra layer of shit away from 36 degrees. And like you said, those drives will get a lot more roll with a 3 inch layer of frost on the surface, than a 3 inch layer of cold soup.

We are currently getting our first taste of winter. About 3 inches of white shit saturday night. Low 20s this morn. Cold enough to keep me off the bike till I gets my cycling booties from santa.

2 degrees this morning east of the Cascade mountains. Had a nice power outage from 4am to 7:30 am this morning. Scrambled to get a propane heater going in the pumphouse so the pipes wouldnt freeze and a fire in the fireplace so the wife wouldnt get cold. I even did the 45 minute roundtrip to McDonalds to get hot breakfast and coffee for the family at 5:30. :)

Going below 0 tonight with no snow on the ground...hope it doesnt kill my wheat field, that would suck $$$.

In the minuses in celsius, 20s for the Americans. Tonight we are supposed to get our first real snowfall of the season in Toronto... about 7 to 8 centimetres, (2 to 3 inches)

It was about 44 here when we went on our (almost) daily 5:20 a.m. walk, according to my super accurate indoor-outdoor digital thermometer.

54 is a little on the high side for these parts this time of year, but not out of the question.

Thing is, in my area, rainfall amounts can vary wildly this time of year, but the temps vary little. A high of 55 would be very warm, a high of 45 would be fairly cool. If it dips below freezing, it's generally for an hour or two right as the sun's coming up. So temps in the teens are out of the ordinary.

It's usually 48-49 in the early afternoon, 36-38 in the early AM, and usually drizzling/light rain/mist falling. And if it ain't raining, it's foggy as fuck. Spring weather is radically unpredictable, winter weather is generally pretty consitant, just a matter of how hard it's raining and how hard the wind's blowing.

Give it 3-4 weeks, and we'll probably see a few nasty storms, then things start warming and drying again...

as a general rule.

Typical winter weather here, well maybe not typical but the classic winter pattern:

A week of rain (usually a few heavy showers followed by intermittent drizzle) followed by two weeks of sun. Rainy mornings in the 40s with highs in the 50s or 60s. Sunny mornings can get down below freezing on some really dry days with highs as high as 80.

Winter and spring are really what make the weather here so enjoyable. Things go dormant and get brown and dried out in the summer, but the first winter rain is when things start turning green again and dormant seeds start germinating.

The classic pattern hasn't materialized much the past few years, hence the drought. This week (actually the storm a couple of weeks ago) is a good start.

My hot water heater takes a shit and I am not going 12 hours with out a new one. I have the ability to replace it, and if I did not, I know someone who would for a meal, cash,weed,beer or the equivalent. Some one I know would have a functional used one if I did not have the jack to score a new one.

Combine that with my twin 5000 watt generators and we are good to go.

I did replace it, just 3 years ago. The pos Whirlpool made in Johnson,Tennesee is still under warranty. So they sent me a new thermocouple manifold assembly, said the old one was defective, and this would fix the problem. So I put that in (what a pain in the ass) and it'll fire up... for about 5 minutes and then shuts itself off and won't fire again until it's completely cooled off. :brad:

So I call their warranty department again and now they're going to send me a new gas valve. Yeah, like that's going to work... your replacement parts are just as defective as the originals, even moreso, you stupid hicks.

Motherfuck, the old water heater this one replaced had been in the house since it was built in 1980. 26 fucking years, never a problem until it finally died, and this piece of shit motherfucker is only 3 years old?

Road trip, Eastern Tennesee, where I'll go postal on the dumbfuck engineers who designed this piece of shit. But first, I'm stopping at the Loews store who sold me this piece of shit.
