Got My Clock Fixed

This is a ships bell clock that I inherited from my dad when he passed away about 20 years ago, and it's mostly been sitting in a closet since then.
It's a Seth Thomas clock that was made around 1950. It has a bell that rings with the traditional 4 hour watch on a ship.

1 chime at 12:30
2 chimes at 1:00
2 chimes, then one chime at 1:30
2 chimes, then two chimes at 2:00
etc.

At 4:30 it starts over at 1 chime.

I haven't heard this clock chime since it was in my parents' house when I was a child (quite some time ago).

It's basically been sitting in a closet for about 20 years. The spring that drives the bells was stuck, and I sent it out to be reconditioned a couple of weeks ago. Just got it back and it works great.

This may seem silly, but those bells are soooo cool.

I've got another old clock that's even cooler. I'll post that one later.

That is cool man. I bet it was a reflective moment when you heard it. Good, fond memories I trust.

Most definitely. A very pleasant sound with very pleasant memories.

This is my "grandfather clock", though technically it's called a floor standing regulator.

It has no bells and was built to be very accurate.

It was made in 1884, another Seth Thomas, and has been in our (my mom's) family since it was new. I inherited it from my mom when she passed away in 1995. I have a picture of me when I was about 2 years old, in my grandmother's house, with my mom and my sister, with this clock in the background. I should probably call it my grandmother clock.

There's a lot of history behind this clock. One interesting thing is that the pendulum weight used to be filled with mercury, but that spilled out during the Loma Prieta earthquake in the Bay Area in 1989.

It's probably my most valuable possession. Worth some $$ as an antique but it's much more valuable as a link to our family's past. It will not be sold as long as I'm alive, and will go to my son someday. It still keeps perfect time, BTW.

I used to have a beautiful old "Regulator" clock that I had set out in the garage meaning to get fixed and set back up eventually. When my ex-wife was moving out she dropped a box on it and smashed. It was an accident but I was pretty upset about it and just went and got in the ar to take a drive before I lost it.
