ESPN's 30/30, "The U"

Post by Q, West Coast Style »

Suprised no thread on the film yet. It's amazing what Miami (or as Jimmie Johnson says it "Maya-amah") was able to get away with back then, until that 1991 Cotton Bowl came along and prompted the NCAA to basically create a new chapter in the rulebook regarding celebrations and sportsmanship.

The U rolling into the Cotton Bowl in Army fatigues will NEVER suck....too bad V.Testeverde DID suck in that game. To this day I still can't believe that he threw 5 INTs and they still had a chance at the end to win.

As for the documentary, one of the best I've ever seen about ANYTHING. Very entertaining and a reminder of some of the future NFL bad asses that came out of that program.

And, uh, may be calling you. If you can, please take your name off that and, um, and what do you call it just have it as a number on the voice mail, just have it as your telephone number. That's it, OK. You gotta do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right. Bye."

That was the Fiesta Bowl.

What is wrong with Bernie Kosar? He looked awful and was slurring a good number of words.

I enjoyed it from start to finish. And ya, Kosar was wasted.

I wouldn't go that far, but it was interesting.

Coupled with ESPN's OTL's report yesterday about FSU players being "learning disabled" and not being able to read or write above a 3rd grade level, it makes U wonder how ridiculously illiterate most of those Miami players were back then, and now.

For the most part, NCAA academic rules are a joke for "gifted" athletes. Why they even bother with any pretense of these hoodlums receiving a "higher" education is nonsense. They get recruited to win games, bring the school prestige and money, and that's it.

And when they graduate with a degree in Social Science but aren't good enough to make it in the NFL, they're qualified to dump bedpans.

And for that matter, going back to Q's original post, it was '86, not '91.

I didn't see the film, but it doesn't matter. I really don't need to be reminded of how badly, or why, I hated Miami back then.

I could watch that '92 Sugar Bowl 24/7.
I could watch the '88 ND-Miami "Catholics vs. Convicts" game 24/7. I was at that game. I lost my voice midway through the 1st quarter and didn't get it back until three days later.

Considering he mentioned them in the same breath as Penn State and Oklahoma . . .

What fucking planet are you living on? It must have been a hiccup on SS's part.
He obviously was differentiating between beating a classy program and beating a classless program, since he mentioned all of those programs in contrast to Miami.

Using your logic, beating Miami isn't all that big a deal right now. Same thing for Penn State in the first half of this decade, or Oklahoma for most (if not all) of the 1990's.

I wish they would have deleted the Cotton Bowl part vs. Texas. That shit was nasty. GREAT fucking episode though. The best one yet by far.
