Spurrier needs to hang it up

Post by Danimal »

Spurrier made his rep on being an offensive guru, he isn't one anymore, folks have long since caught-up to his O. SC relies on their D. He's been at SC since '05, if they were going to gett better they'd have done it by now. How much longer do recruits buy his spiel because he's Steve Spurrier? It's become apparent they're a perennial 7-6 team. This class is already a step back from the previous one. He got schooled today by Edsell, who's working with a team consisting mainly of 2*'s.

If I'm SC I keep Ellis Johnson at DC and make a run at Mike Leach as HC. It's time to look to the future and I hate to see a coaching legend just fade-out like Bowden did.

Kick SC out? That would be death to them. Cockfans are some of the biggest SEC SEC chanters out there. Nevermind that they don't actually contribute to the SEC's status as top-con. They're like that skinny kid in The Warriors that gets beat-up a lot but is also the one that tags everything with a W.

I will say that for a team that is historically mediocre they do have quite good fan support.

Solid take. I was in Tampa for the Outback Bowl back in '02, and all of the SC fans I spoke with knew their team inside and out, from recruiting to team history. South Carolina fans are pretty hardcore about their 'Cocks.

The SEC fans in here seem to have a hard-on for the Cocks (pun intended), but they're not Mississippi State-esque or Vanderbilt-esque bad.

Not to nitpick, but they did beat Houston in the '06 Liberty Bowl (sorry, Rumps).

i've been watching this all year, we gotta BTPCF rip on Vanderbilt all day because of SECBSH, every day? Vandy beat BC last year in a bowl game better than Notre Dame didn't play in and made the Sweet 16 in hoops the year before. EAD, in Missouri cry-baby terms, Notre Dame fan.

Touched a nerve, did I? I was talking historically, of course, and limiting my discussion to football. It wasn't intended as a comparison between Vandy and ND in the least, but if you want it to be, at least from an historical standpoint, there's no comparison between the football programs at the two schools. http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/mi ... ng_pct.php Btw, prior to last season, when was the last time Vandy had been to a bowl game? And I'm pretty sure I don't rip on Vandy every single day.

Nor did I single out Vandy, I included Mississippi State as well.

They have already been in the ACC. They left due to academic requirements.

If the SEC kicked out the cocks, they would have to go to the Big East.

They left because they saw dollar signs with SEC expansion for the NCAA allowing championship games in football and the revenue sharing of the SEC.

To say that South Carolina "left" the ACC for the SEC is grossly inaccurate. South Carolina was independent for about 20 years between the time they left the ACC and joined the SEC.

As for the main thrust of this thread, South Carolina under SOS strikes me as a very schizophrenic team. They're all but guaranteed to pull off at least one conference upset, always seem to play Georgia tough no matter what, but also are all but guaranteed to lose at least one conference game to an inferior opponent.

Spurrier's problem isn't his coaching ability or scheme at South Carolina; it's the ability to bring in the same level of player on a consistent basis and level of dedication that he had at Florida.

They left the ACC in 1971 because they saw dollar signs with the SEC expansion that would happen 20 years down the line?

I got side tracked and misposted. They saw dollar signs overall as an independent at first. They wanted to be a football oriented school and the ACC had moved away from that in the 60s. They also just weren't competitive as a basketball program there and thought they could do better and get more exposure on their own. $$$ Later brought them to the SEC... for obvious reasons.

Lighten up, McGraw.
No I had an awesome weekend... probably the best New Year's Eve of my life. Spent Thursday, Friday, and Saturday... for the most part... in a suite at one of the nation's newest and nicest condominium/hotel, two of my closest friends, and three of the hottest women in town. This year has no where to go but down unless I hit a streak of luck like I have never seen before.

No they didnt want to deal with new Recruiting and Academic Regulations. Even said they didnt.

They had one ACC championship. It had zero to do with football success considering South Carolina has never had any.

South Carolina also hated the North Carolina schools, which I dont blame them.

Current director cup standings, only one North Carolina school is ahead of FSU. Pretty damn good considering FSU doesnt compete in Women's Field Hockey, Mens Soccer, and Mens Water Polo.

Jesus Christos the only school Florida State might be ahead of academically is NC State... might. I love the way you completely ignored that.

Don't even pull that shit about FSU "Not even competing in... blah, blah, and blah.". You compete in more sports than all the North Carolina Schools except UNC who you compete in equal number of sports and low and behold they're fucking ahead of you in the shitty ass director's cup which only California schools give two flying fucks about... Florida State and UNC compete in 18 different sports, Duke only 13, and Wake Forest 16.

As far as the DC... Wow cool man, you can go all Stanford Style Board :meds:. FSU has national titles in four different sports in the entire history of the Athletic Department: Football, Track and Field, Softball, and Men's Gymnastics (all the way back in the 1950s). Only two of those sports, consisting of football and Outdoor track and field, since you joined the ACC, and only one of them in the last decade. Three of the four Carolina Schools (UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest) have more national titles than you, titles in more sports than you, have won more of them since you joined the ACC and in more sports... hell UNC has won more national titles in more sports in the last decade than Florida State has won in the history of its school. Duke has won more titles and in more sports since Florida State entered the ACC than Florida State has won, ever.

The only thing Florida State was asked to do when it was brought into the ACC was prop them up in football and you've shit the bed doing that as well.

FSU is second only to Clemson, who joined the ACC in the 50s, with 12 ACC Football Championships. Two NCs, 6 big four bowl wins and three BCS NC appearances since joining the ACC in 1992. Only OU has more BCS NC appearances. Yep FSU shit the bed... :meds:

I screwed up on saying most titles... I meant they have titles in more sports. Which they do than than Florida State... Wake Forest; Men's soccer, Women's soccer, LaCrosse, Men's Golf, and Baseball... Duke Men's Basketball, Soccer, Women's Golf, Men's Golf,LaCrosse, Women's LaCrosse, and Fencing*... according to the ACC, their athletic sites, etc.; those sports are no more obscure than T&F or Men's gymnastics (and that's coming from the alumni of the undisputed kings of Men's Gymnastics).

*Duke only has 10 NCAA titles but also has titles in LaCrosse (both men's and women's) and Fencing before they were NCAA sanctioned events (LaCrosse was sanctioned in 1971 and Fencing sometime in the 90s). Before these sports, respectively, were NCAA sanctioned they had independent governing bodies for their sports at the collegiate level. Duke claims 4 titles in Men's LaCrosse before it was as an NCAA sanctioned sport. They also claim 2 Women's Lacrosse titles before its sanctioning. Count 'em or don't but they're not NCAA. Most of John's Hopkins, Syracuse, Navy, and Army's that are claimed and touted by ESPN, their websites, and the rest of the media are not NCAA titles either but are recognized as titles none the less. They claim one fencing title.

I got my info on number of sports for Duke from a school history booklet on Duke (my sister is considering going there) but after checking their website they have apparently added Combined Fencing (after disbanding the Men's only team previously), Wrestling (again), Swimming and Diving, Women's Golf, Rowing, and Women's LaCrosse (again).

Give it to them. I counted two NCs for FSU when the softball team competed in AIAW.

So Duke and UNC have more NCs than FSU, I can live with that.
