put out by Rhino, so you know it's pretty deece vs. some of the other Star stuff out there that has been lower quality.

i was skeptical, but some great stuff on there (along with the studio LP's which you don't want to pay for *again*).....not sure it's worth *buying* per se.

Chilton taking lead vocal on "Got Kind of Lost", the great rocker from Chris Bell's solo LP...purdy cool since Alex has kind of mailed it in/taken the ironic campy vocals for most of the BS catalogue since then. though, i respect his efforts to bring attention to the Memphis R&B he grew up with....by covering them.

cover of Todd Rundgren's Slut (done at the Columbia show in 94) is rocking here--the studio version back in the day.

she may be a slut, but she looks good to me....S L U T...

some of the demos and live stuff at lafayette's music room from 1973 in Memphis are great. this probably the end of the Star catalog, definitive collection.

like i suggest before, there's been a lot of mediocre stuff out in P2P over the years. this stuff is way superior, some i've got....but, really, this mostly lives up to the studio catalog honks know and love by adding to it. some of raw stuff is great and gloriously out of tune and the vocals miss (but it rocks).

covers, T. Rex, L. Wainwright, Cole Porter, Rundgren, Flying Burrito Bros.

most of which are done more capably here than other places.

really like the box. I'm an absolute freak over those demo versions and outtakes. love hearing those whenever I can get 'em (ie youtube Smile sessions). interesting that with these Big Star albums I prefer the album takes far more than the alternatives.

that show was awesome until ZOO Records decided to not reimburse KCOU for the equipment they used to record the show for them to make that album. buttfuck Zoo Records in its mouf. Led to the established college radio station people getting fired and a new Cranberries friendly format. Then again it let me go from a 2-6am shift to 4-7pm so I guess I can't complain too much.
