Raymond Chandler

Post by Mikey »

The nice thing about a Kindle is that if you have a sudden urge to read any book, if it's available for download you can get it right away.

Yesterday I downloaded "The Long Goodbye". I've always wanted to read some of Chandler's books and this one lives up to all of the positive reviews. Though this story wasn't put to film until 1973 (with Elliot Gould as Philip Marlowe), it's like reading a Noir movie. I'm prolly 25% of the way through and am thoroughly enjoying his writing, from the wise-ass Private Eye Marlowe to Chandler's descriptions of life in LA and the rest of SoCal in the 1940s and 1950s.

When I'm done with this one I'll definitely be reading more of Chandler's work. Any recommendations out there?

the Big Sleep. might also try Dashiel Hammet's classics: Maltese Falcon and the Thin Man.
""On a lonely planet spinning its way toward damnation amid the fear and despair of a broken human race, who is left to fight for all that is good and pure and gets you smashed for under a fiver? Yes, it's the surprising adventures of me, Sir Digby Chicken-Caesar!"

Those are all on my list. The Big Sleep was the first Marlowe novel. Might try some Mickey Spillane too, if I don't get tired of the genre.

after reading the Big Sleep, or even seeing some other "film noir" type anti-hero, detective flicks.....it's good to go back and see the Big Lebowski which is a kind of homage to Chandler's Big Sleep and the genre. the Coens even give it way with "The Big..." in the title.
