MLK Day - Do you get the day off?

We don't. We get something like 6 or 7 paid holidays and MLK isn't one of them. Neither is Cesar Chavez or Colombus Day. Our main clients (CA utilities) all get it off, as do most government workers. I guess it gives us a chance to catch up on our work. :meds:

Shit, when I worked for the feds we must have had a dozen or more paid holidays every year. Plus a lot of vacation.

I'm off from my position as science lab technician at Edison State College. School is closed. Of course banks, and mail service are not operating, but I see our trash pick up on Monday is not affected. Rack privatization of services.

I do, but don't. Monday I have to go in and fill out paperwork for my new job and set up my office. I will probably be there until 3 tops.

I'm surprised my kids have the day off school. They usually never observe MLK day.

I'll be working and damn glad to have a job after being laid off for 2 weeks. My company has 8 paid holidays a year and i didn't get paid for the last one (New Years day) due to being laid off. First time I'd been outta' work since 1990. Drove me batshit crazy.

Wags, glad to hear you're back at work.

The company I worked for moved out of my area. I had no job for the past couple of weeks and was going out of my mind. I was worried I wouldn't find anything and glad that I did.

2010 will be better for us, Wags! :)

Don't work for the feds but I do get MLK as well as Presidents day off. Chances are though I'll be doing some work from home. Seems like unless I take a vacation I'm always doing work.

Could there have been a weirder combo?
So that only happens once every handful of years then?

Being self-employed, I can take the day off whenever I want to (within reason, of course). But a day off also means I don't get paid, since I need to work to bring in the pay.

Then again, there have been plenty of occasions when I've worked but received no pay to show for it. The downside to being self-employed, I guess.

Wags, congrats on the new job.

You seem like you've been through a rough patch recently. How is the new yob?

Robert E Lee day has been celebrated since the Civil War. MLK Day is only 24 years old.

Jim and Terry

Not a new job, but called back from lay-off, thank God.

My company has been bleeding badly since October of '08 and I've been one of the fortunate few who hadn't been laid off or just flat out terminated since then. It's a wonder they can still keep the lights on.

But it has been rough... and stressful. Never really knowing if you're going to have a job next week, next month, or next year. Overtime? forget about it. Benefits? We don't accrue vacation time anymore when I was getting 5 weeks a year. They quit matching the 401k contribution. They do still carry half of our health insurance premiums though, which is nice.

As rough as it's been and may continue to be, I'm still one of the lucky ones and very thankful for that. I started at the bottom in this company almost 27 years ago and worked my way up. At one time about 3 years ago I was supervising an entire department that ran 3 shifts. Now I'm back to doing whatever job needs doing. Haven't had to scrub toilets yet but if asked to do that, I'll find the brush. The pay is the same.

Wagon, with your neck under the axe and you not sure if it will fall or not, have you seriously looked into other options for yourself (and family) in the event that you find yourself OUT of work at that company for good?

Is there a Paln B?

Plan B is to cash out my 401k and go to the casino, quickly followed by jumping off the I-435 bridge into the Missouri river.

Yeah but there's also a shortage of square headed dry wall screws.

Sorry to hear that, Wags. The organization I work for just posted a job for a web developer - and we got 6 responses. I am at a loss for an explanation. 6?

Was laid off again last week for two days and the first two days this week. Unwar short paychecks that barely pay more than unemployment.

On the bright side, was called back to work today and it looks like we're going to have a steady backlog of work for awhile. We landed a big order from India that had been pending for some time which hopefully will get us thru February. March is traditionally our busiest month of the year, what with U.S. home-builders trying to get a jump on the spring and summer building season.

Crossing my fingers that the domestic homebuilding slump will be over this year. Did I say slump? I meant utter devastation.

I worked hard today. My back hurts and that's a good feeling right about now. And no, my back doesn't hurt from driving a forklift. I'm back doing what I did for my first 10 years at this company. Running, saws, shears, punch presses, etc. Direct fucking labor.

War manufacturing.
