The Dils were a cut above, they could go toe to toe with early Damned and win I reckon, 'What goes on' puts 'No Fun' by the Pistols to shame.
And poking around, listening to other bands out of that scene that I've never heard of, ie: The Avengers just left me dry - but easy to forget it was cutting edge then, so much has gone on since.
Funny you mentioned The Clash, funny story. Musicians Union was harassing Dils, trying to press gang them into joining so their manager (communist party member RACKETH) signed them up to International Workers of the World, entertainment branch for 25$
They did a gig with Clash and Union took revenge
The Clash roundly ignored us throughout, apart from their junkie drummer, who sneered at my attempts to tune my tom toms off-mike. We got no soundcheck. We were told at 7:40 to go on at 8:00, not 8:45. We drank our complimentary room temp 7Up & went on. Hey! Chip was beet-red & about to collapse after 4 songs. The union sound men were all doing their jobs, after a fashion. They sabotaged us creatively, testing all frequencies, etc., Dils in nightmare dub. The union, it seems. Hella voice, for a moment, gone. Huge bass, oops! Where’s, oh - THERE’s the drums- oops! Fans screaming “What the f#*’s goin’ on?! We can’t hear you !?“ Bo Diddley & his ''band'', went on next- perfect sound. Then the Smash finally appeared. Coked to the gills, slick, soul dead. Girl punks were dragged from stage edge & cursed at by security, “Fuck you ho, shutup”. I nearly got stomped rescuing Gerber from them. The Smash were pounding away, oblivious to the BS 15 feet away. Some things never change. I came out of that quite disillusioned.
Q: So you never dealt with them again?
I met Strummer, & Jones, a few other times. They tried to buy our songs after our breakup. They were rejected.
