Let's Talk Scotch

Never been a scotch drinker, but I've decided to give it an extended try hopefully not to my ultimate demise.
Bought a bottle of The Glenilvet a couple of weeks ago, and some Johnny Walker Black this week.
The Glenlivet was very smooth and seemed almost sweet. When I first tried the JWB it almost tasted like it had liquid smoke added. Not as smooth as the Glenlivet but very tasty.
So, I'm not an expert.
Single malt vs. blended wiskeys
What's your favorite brand, expensive or for "every" day consumption
How do you drink it (neat, over ice, w/ water or soda, mixed with diet Coke, whatever)
Discuss.

A good 40 years ago my brother and I polished off a bottle of J & B (Jewish Booze) and I was falling down drunk. Never again. I'm guessing Dinsdale and/or some others here will set you straight. Good luck.

That would depend on the malt and depend on the blend. If you like Glevlivet, you might want to try other Highland malts. I'm not a big scotch drinker, but I do prefer the Highland malts. Personally, I would advise against Islay malts. They taste like industrial waste to me.
I prefer any respectable small batch bourbon to scotch any day, though.

I'm thinking they would make it really hard to keep your joint burning evenly.

I hate to paint with the proverbial broad brush, so I won't.
I'm sure, somewhere there's a perfectly fine Islay, somewhere.
I just haven't had it yet.
The word "gamey" doesn't
quite fit, but close.
When you spend $$$$$$, it's all about the blends. On the shelves that Perk shops from unassisted, the singles are usually smoother,
as a general rule.

Always thought the 'Taistesmuddaigh' bullshit was the drink companies in a brilliant marketing coup - persuading middle class trainspotters to buy, by preying on their insecurities, their love of one-upsmanship and their desire to appear a connoisseur.

That's because you're such a fucking pussy, your zeal to "stick it to the man" and educate us "lesser forms" on the errors of our ways has overided your abiilty to enjoy the simple complicated things, like a fine glass of whisky.
I directly correlate this inability with your propensity for douchitude.
I blame your parents.

Likes me a good peaty single malt. It took me a while to understand that Scotch is meant to be done with water - for a long time I thought it was best done straight but water can deepen the flavor and allow it to be savored more readily. I recommend Laphroaig - and pour a little good spring water into it.

Sometimes, blended in the blender to make a milkshake.
Do you use that to wash the taste of jizz out of your mouth?

Scotch makes a fine antiseptic, can we talk beer instead?
Had my first Schlitz ever tonight and it didn't suck. Full bodied, yet quite smooth. I knew my dad wasn't a complete dumbfuck.
Oh, and he was from Glascow, Scotland. Came to the U.S. when he was 12. Pretty sure he didn't drink Scotch.

I have absolutely no problem with losing my dignity, memory, control of bodily functions through alcohol - I just find that I can do it without discussing sublime, peaty aromas. What a bunch of shit.

How about vile or nasty?
I'll still take a good bourbon or cognac anyday. Scotch is for poseurs.

Finally a friend said you can't gulp scotch and damn, if he wasn't right.
It's all right there. A drink so intolerable, you can't gulp it down.
'Oh, waiter? I'd like a cheeseburger. Problem is, I'm a bit fat. Could you make me a cheeseburger that's so incredibly awful - that it's just tolerable to nibble once an hour?
I'll busy myself telling my friends how much I paid for it while I'm not eating.'

I'm sure n...iggers will get around to discovering scotch eventually. You can look forward to rappers named La'Froaig Jackson in the not too distant future.

So, basically, you're a drunk. Taste doesn't enter into the equation. It's just a matter of getting BAC levels as high as possible.
Nothing wrong with that, per say, just don't hate on those of us that, believe it or not, might actually enjoy the flavor of the stuff.
I used to be like you when I was 23. All liquor tasted like teh sukk and it's only purpose was to do shots until it and the rest of your stomach contents ended up on the floor. I was convinced that all vodka was particularly undrinkable till my bro in law mixed me a ketel one and soda. Now, i could live on the stuff.
Someday phibes you may have enough disposable income to sample fine spirits.
Someday.
