Speaking of yesterday...KC Scott wrote:I can't beleive we made it through yesterday without a single death
We had a letter waiting for us when we got home from work (we opened it this morning), from our son's HS where he's a senior this year. The letter said, basically, that midsemester progress reports are coming out and he's pulling a D or an F in one of his classes and his graduation might be in jeopardy. WFT?!? This is a kid who has never had a grade below a B, has taken almost every AP class in the school (except for Russian sub hunting and dressing in women's underwear), National Merit Scholar, Captain of the Academic Team, Student of the Month in March, etc., etc. We confronted him with it this morning and he honestly had no idea how he could be failing any of his classes. We're pretty sure it's a mistake. His AP Physics teacher has been out for a some time getting chemo treatment, so maybe the grades didn't get in or something.
The thing is, the school is closed today, and they have Spring Break next week. So, there's no way to resolve this or even find out which class is in question for probably 10 days. Whether it's a mistake or not, for them to send this kind of letter out so that it arrives the day before spring break shows an incredible lack of judgement on their part. I called and left a message at the office telling them so.
At first I considered that it might be an April Fools' joke, but that's not likely.
This whole thing has me really spun up right now...

April fools day and Easter have been on sort of an even keel in my family. Nobody cares.

Lamb?
Shirley that calls for some realllly chewey red... like a gnarlyass Napa Cab or Syrah. But I'm sure a Bordeaux blend would do.

Thinking about one or more of these, which are all available right now at my local Costco where I'll be making my weekly run tomorrow morning. We've already gone through multiple bottles of each and they're all very good, especially the Syrah and the Santa Barbara Cab.Dinsdale wrote:Mikey wrote:

Not familiar with that particular bottle, but from the pedigree, I'll bet it's a winner.
Reading the link, it gave a bunch of winery speak for "the shit we couldn't get rid of," but I'll take Sonoma Meritage Shit They Couldn't Get Rid Of over most peoples' shit they couldn't get rid of (the high end wines have taken a big hit in the down economy, the < $10 market is booming like a mofo).
Doesn't list the blend that I could see on that site, but I'll bet dollars to donuts it's on the label.

All of CH's wines fit the description of "the shit we couldn't get rid of", or maybe shit that they dumped to sell off-label so they could keep the price of their own brand higher.Dinsdale wrote:

I'm no wine expert but almost every bottle I've bought with the CH label has been light years better than anything else you find with a pretty label in the $8.00 to $16.00 range.

Re: Easter
Nothing like a small town funeral procession, I mean to tell you.
We leave the funeral home in Seneca to make the 5 mile drive out to the country church and cemetary. Leading the hearse are a dozen biker dudes on Harleys waving large American flags off the back with another fifty or so cars and trucks following. Driving thru the middle of town, pretty much everyone stops what they're doing, removes their hat or otherwise respectfully face the procession and wait for it to pass.
We pass by this big ass house that's being re-roofed by about 8 guys and they all stand up and salute the flag as it drives bye. We get out on U.S. 36 and all the traffic that's coming in the opposite direction pull over and wait for it to pass.
Life's a bitch and then you die, but knowing that good folks like those in North-Central Kansas still exist somewhat renews my faith in the basic goodness of people.
While it was a somber occasion, I got to see some people I hadn't seen in 15-20 years and that was cool. What was even cooler is that both my brothers and sister were there and all 4 of us hadn't been together at the same time for at least 15 years.
Yet I'm afraid that we'll all be back together again fairly soon as my mother isn't and hasn't been getting along very well for quite some time. One other uncle and 2 aunt's as well who are in their late 80's-early 90's. It's said that deaths happen in 3's, but i'm fairly certain this family will experience 5 in a relatively short time frame.

Re: Easter
It's tough losing aunts and uncles, and the adults you looked up to when growing up, and I have attended a lot of funerals in the last five years to pay my respects to family and family friends. Your comments about small town funerals are spot on. I've never been in a funeral procession when motorists failed to pull off the road when meeting the procession or having folks on the street acknowledge the procession and pay their respects to the family. Kind of cool and refreshing, like you said, and I feel fortunate to have been raised in an area where those customs are practiced.

Re: Easter
pulling over for funeral processions seems to be a southern, and i guess mid western thing. they did it in TN when i lived there. In the northeast, not so much, but, we generally do pull over for emergency vehicles and school buses. and i don't even get red assed about it like todd. well, maybe a bit for school buses in cases where the fukkin' bus driver makes no attempt to let the half mile of traffic backed up behind her pass. i think the policy should be modified a bit. in cases where bus drivers let off kids who don't have to cross the street, they shouldn't have to run their flashers. and for kids past maybe 4th grade or so, they shouldn't have them at all. if you are in 10th grade and dumb enough to run in front of cars, chuck darwin should have a crack at your dumb ass.
