No. At best they sniff the seat from where She just arose. The first tune is just two chords monotonously trotted about in some sort of Gypsy Kings-Lite imitation. The second is more interesting--same stuff but more energy with the idiotic crowd who actually listen to this stuff? Impressive, I suppose, since it's not jabbering rut-funk, but totally boring and tedious. Sure, it's miles beyond John Tesh or the dozen other Yanni spin-offs, and it's great that folks are promoting guitar as guitar. But it's not flamenco or true Gitano spirituality at all. I don't doubt they've got a fairly diverse repertoire and can mix it up, but this stuff is wallpaper. Check out Manolo Sanlucar.

I'm not blown away by anything Rodrigo does. He's certainly competent, but he doesn't seem to be anything special. 'Generic' comes to mind. I am however pretty damn impressed by Gabriela's right hand.
I shot you those two clips simply because they're easily accessible songs. I've heard other things from them that were more intricate and varied - and more purely flamenco - but the main thing that always grabs me when I see them is that right hand of hers.

Indeed, and it's a benefit of her petite hand. The basic law of physics which bestrides all of sports also attends various aspects of playing instruments like guitar--namely, the amount of force (strength) required to move an object increases exponentially to the weight. So, the ability of such full sized primates as Segovia or Julian Bream to play that dazzling whisking right-hand rhythm is about that of Shaq to do a single pull-up.

Suffice to say, I've been playing guitar and other instruments for a good while.
Good vid, Van, with the two great Gitanos having a pow-wow. Notice how Sanlucar eschews a capo while Paco goes with the standard second fret. Worlds beyond the kids, though she can sit on my face while excitedly strumming, etc.

Nick, you've got them mixed up. Sanlucar is using the capo there, while Paco is eschewing it. In some of the other vids I watched last night Paco was using it and Sanlucar wasn't, and vice versa.

Nick, the Dance of the Seven Veils absolutely works for me, though I've certainly seen it performed by more beautiful women.
Okay, the truly ideal woman looks and plays like the ones I mentioned, while also being a world-class dancer.
I could actually do without the operatic voice. Maybe that means I'm lacking in culture, but I've never enjoyed that type of singing. Love the symphony beneath the voice; could do without the voice.
Oh, and yeah, to say that Dins is shy about expressing his opinions here, well, a take doesn't get much more wrong than that.

I enjoy the symphonic orchestra playing in support of ballets and beneath the singing in most operas. I don't enjoy the actual singing.
I gather you're saying that a symphony is a specific work performed by an orchestra, in which case I shouldn't refer to the music they're playing in support of an opera as a symphony. If that's what you mean, then okay, I stand corrected.

Although the terms are diluted -- all symphonies are orchestras, but not all orchestras are symphonies. An orchestra can be of limited instrumentation, to meet the "letter-of-the-law" definition of "symphony," full instrumentation is required -- winds, strings, percussion, and bass. Depending on which instrumentation is present/lacking, smaller versions can be called "symphonic band," or if you're really feeling dorky, a "chamber orchestra," although that term has generally come to represent "chamber music," which are essentially abbreviated symphonies (which are generally in multiple movements, much like Nick's posts).
The people playing instruments at an opera are members of an "orchestra."
Again, the terms have morphed, and there isn't much cut-and-dried to it, except that operas aren't symphonies.

Re: Nick, your take, please...
Modern symphonic (or philharmonic) orchestras generally employ 100 or more musicians.
Operas are generally scored for, and get by with, a much smaller ensemble. More like a chamber orchestra.
Otherwise those hideous voices would probably be completely drowned out.

A sympony is a piece of music.
An orchestra is a group of musicians.
Symphonies and other pieces of music (concerto, etc.) are played by orchestras.
Other names for smaller ensembles:
Chamber orchestra
String quartet (2 violins, viola, cello)
String quintet (can have 2 violas or 2 cellos, or one double bass)
Sometimes a solo instrument is added as in flute with string quartet, or piano with string quartet.

Meh. I hate opera singing, though I love the music.

I'm saying I love the "band" beneath the voice. Though they're not playing an actual symphony, I love their playing. You're agreeing that a symphony isn't only a specific piece of music, but that it's also another name for the orchestra.Love the symphony beneath the voice

Symphony
1 : a consonance or harmony of sounds <night was a symphony of sounds -- Guy Fowler>
2 a : an instrumental musical passage in a vocal composition b : SINFONIA 1 c : an instrumental movement in a choral work <the Pastoral Symphony in Handel's Messiah> d : an elaborate instrumental composition usually in sonata form for full orchestra e : a work of similar proportions for organ f : SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
3 a : consonance or harmony of color (as in a painting) b : a pictorial composition or other arrangement marked by consonance or harmony of color
4 : something that in its harmonious complexity or variety suggests a symphonic composition
OK, I'm wrong but I'm right. The "Symphony" that you're talking about is basically an abbreviation of "symphony orchestra".
Like you said, the whole thing's gotten kind of murkey.

If you're refering to enjoying the band that's playing the music, it's an "orchestra." If you're enjoying the music being played for the people singing on stage, it's called a "score," like any other musical.
It sure the fuck ain't a "symphony."

Yes, symphony orchestras do refer to themselves as symphonies, but, the word itself, used in this case is technically an adjective. Orchestra is the noun.Dinsdale wrote:OK then.Van wrote:

The fact of her petite hand being the central factor in her flamenco strumming is similarly obvious.
