Of course. They were a symbol of our economic power just like the Pentagon is a symbol of our military power and the target of the final plane was remains undetermined. Presumably, the target was the White House or Capitol building.

It isn't any mystery why al-qaeda attacked us. Their motivations and objectives have been explicitly stated by them and they are, without qualification, religious. This is not arguable on any level.
