6 sigma is a system that allegedly improves processes, making us more efficient. I think it is mostly a system for managers to justify catered meetings.

I guess one has to work in the aerospace industry to understand what he's saying. Boeing is a perfect example of what he's talking about.

Make it be known that I have a deep respect for the people who work in the manufacturing world. My Dad worked in a cast iron foundry most of his life, my Great Grandfather Otto Kuhn was in fact a machinst/tool & die maker for the Borden Company. I once worked a night shift at Crouse-Hinds (Cooper) operating multi-spindle drill presses, machining electrical parts. Two of my best pals back north were tool and die guys at Smith-Corona. When I look at a metal part I am reminded of the many people who work making these essential items. I tip my hat to all of them.

Tool.

I thought manufacturing was outlawed in the USA?

Where I used to work we survived 8 years producing and releasing software and meeting every deadline we ever had without the benefit of any process improvement. Then we started paying ungodly amounts to an outside consulting firm to come in and tell us how to use "agile programming methods". Ever since that time, regardless of the fact that our largest retail partners were largely unaffected by the crash (at least when it came to the need for our product) we saw our workplace gutted by two forces; layoffs and managers stealing resources for CMMI/SPICE activities. They even put out a division wide newsletter in PDF form that consumed at least 16 man hours a week to write, edit and print. Yes, I said PRINT. In a company devoted to the pursuit of digital imaging, archiving and retrieval, we actually wasted money and manpower printing stacks of this shit that nobody would read just so that people could see said stacks in our lobby.

Anyway, I got laid off last summer and couldn't be happier. And my former co-workers started feeling much better when the management team that authored that clusterfuck were frogmarched out of the building by corporate security earlier this spring.

I was on the verge of entering a machinist training program about a decade ago. I stuck with the web thing, it has been a sound decision so far.
